A fireplace clock moves away like a heartbeat. A relentless and rhythmic PULSE cutting through the darkness...

FADE IN:

1JAMIE & CLAIRE INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT - DINING ROOM - NIGHT1

The servants rush to clean up the aftermath of the chaotic brawl that broke out at the end of episode 204. The table is cleared of leftover food and wine from a shortened meal.

A2OMISA2

2INT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S APARTMENT - SALON - NUIT2

MAGNUS leads another group of SERVANTS, quietly cleaning upside-down furniture, overturned trays, various broken objects - CLAIRE looks into the night, so she almost melts into the tapestry of the window. The bells of the mantle clock ring, signaling midnight - RESONATING throughout the apartment.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
I hadn't noticed the sound of the clock until that evening. But at that moment, every annoying tick filled my head, reminding me that Jamie wasn't there. After our dinner disintegrated into a fight, the armed people came and arrested everyone. But all this was a misunderstanding; Alex Randall hadn't raped Mary Hawkins, and Jamie had nothing to do with it. He will soon be liberated from the Bastille. I just had to remind myself
...

Staring, Claire's hands instinctively fall on her belly, sheltering the little life that forms within her.

As the servants finish cleaning and quietly escape from the room...

FERGUS (O.C.)
I walked around the house, Milady. Everything is locked.

Claire's reverie is interrupted by Fergus' voice.

CLAIRE
Thank you, Fergus.

FERGUS hovers by the door, doing his best to mask his own concerns about Jamie's absence.

FERGUS
You should rest, Milady. I will watch over things until Milord returns.

A whisper of smile runs through Claire's lips as she greets Fergus and his attempt to replace his idol, Jamie.

CLAIRE
That's very kind of you. But I can't sleep.

FERGUS
Then I will stay by your side.

Claire sits down in a nearby chair and begins the arduous task of removing the hairpins from her curls. Fergus always hovers unusually in the doorway, some distance away.

CLAIRE
Well, come in.

FERGUS
Those men who attacked you... you say they called you The White Lady. It's true? Are you?

CLAIRE
You mean there really is such a person?

FERGUS
The White Lady is a witch.

CLAIRE
A witch?

FERGUS
Stories are old. It is said that she sees in the center of a man, and if evil is found, she will turn his soul into ashes.

CLAIRE
Let me assure you that I am not a fairytale witch.

FERGUS
That's what I thought. But the ladies of Maison Elise are superstitious.

He comes to see Claire now.

FERGUS (continued)
Hold, Milady.

Fergus picks up a hairbrush and masterfully begins to comb his tangles. Claire is surprised by Fergus' competence.

CLAIRE
You have a soft touch. It's not an easy task with my hair, I'm afraid of it. Where did you learn such a skill?

FERGUS
Ladies of the Maison Elise.

CLAIRE
How did you come to live in... such a place, Fergus?

FERGUS
I was born there. That is what Ms. Elise told me.

CLAIRE
So your mother...?

FERGUS
I wondered which of the ladies was my mother, but I never knew.

Claire's heart breaks as she listens to Fergus' story.

FERGUS (continued)
Madame Elise allowed me to sleep under the stairs, and they sometimes shared their food with me. (then, proudly) Pig's feet were my favorite. You couldn't find anything better in all of Paris.

CLAIRE
They must miss you very much.

FERGUS
Maybe. But I am needed here.

CLAIRE
Yes... It's you.

FERGUS
Frankly, I don't know how you and Milord would manage without me.

This elilicits a laugh from Claire.

CLAIRE
I don't know either, Fergus.

Fergus returns to work, comforting her with every brushstroke.

3JAMIE & CLAIRE'S INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - DAWN3

The light of the new day creeps in through the oversized windows. Fergus fell asleep on the floor, a shawl draped over him. Claire stays awake, staring at the glowing embers of the fireplace. But the sound of footsteps brings her back to life.

JAMIE stands on the doorstep. Claire's stoic façade fades as she sees him. Jamie smiles, tired, but happy to see her. And for a long time, all they do is look at each other. Then Jamie arrives...

JAMIE
(kissing her forehead) You're sitting there all night then?

CLAIRE
I wasn't the only one.

Claire nods to Fergus curled up on the floor. Jamie smiles, then takes the sleeping Fergus in his arms.

CLAIRE

(continued) He just fell asleep.

JAMIE
Come on, boy. You did well to keep your mistress.

As Jamie takes Fergus to bed...

4JAMIE & CLAIRE'S APARTMENT - BEDROOM - LATER4

Claire, now in a dressing gown, sits on the bedroom couch while Jamie joins her.

JAMIE Fortunately
, the captain of the guard arrived with Duverney on his heels, ordering them to release us immediately.

CLAIRE
It's good to have powerful friends.

JAMIE
Are you and the baby okay?

CLAIRE
We're both fine now that you're home. What about Murtagh and Alex?

JAMIE
Murtagh is downstairs washing away the stench of the French prison. Alex didn't do so well. Silas claims to have seen him attack Mary. Her release will require a word from the girl herself.

CLAIRE
Silas made sure that won't happen. He quickly had Marie taken to their estate. (then) The Bastille is not a place for Alex in his fragile health.

JAMIE
I won't shed a tear for any man named Randall.

CLAIRE
Jamie, we need to help her. You saw the way he tried to help Mary. He is not like his brother. Could the Duke not vouch for him?

JAMIE
Sandringham? He will let Alex rot before lifting a finger to help him, now that his secretary has been publicly disgraced. He sent a dispatch to the Bastille releasing Alex from duty.

CLAIRE
Let's hope the Duke had a similar reaction to Charles.

JAMIE
I saw him watch The Prince over dinner, and I think he sees Charles for the bad investment that he is.

CLAIRE
Unfortunately, I saw the Prince and Saint-Germain leave together.

JAMIE
Nothing good can come out of this twinning. I will ask Murtagh to follow St. Germain, see if there is anything suspicious. If he had anything to do with the attack, we'd find out. Do you remember anything else from last night?

CLAIRE
Well, their looks looked like aristocrats, and they wore nice clothes and shoes.

JAMIE
How did you escape?

CLAIRE
They mistook me for a mythical creature called The White Lady. Fergus said it was witch nonsense.

(out of sight) Have you heard of it?

JAMIE
I... could have mentioned once that... I was married to La Dame Blanche.

CLAIRE
What do you have?

JAMIE
At Maison Elise... Charles was pushing whores into my arms - I wanted to remain faithful to you without anyone finding me unmanly.

CLAIRE
And calling me a witch was your best idea? After what we experienced in Cranesmuir?

JAMIE
There was quite a bit of alcohol involved.

Claire shakes her head, stunned.

CLAIRE
How many people have heard you?

JAMIE
Only a few - but I guess it was good gossip to share.

CLAIRE
So maybe the attackers are clients of Maison Elise.

JAMIE
And if we can find them, they can drive us to Saint-Germain. May heaven help him if he is responsible.

Jamie collapses on the couch next to Claire.

CLAIRE
It's been a long night for all of us.

JAMIE
Really. And now all I want is to get rid of those dirty clothes and lie down in your arms.

Jamie and Claire, as they relax and recover from the madness of the previous night.

A5OMISA5

5EXT. STREETS OF PARIS - MISCELLANEOUS - DAY5

Claire's car travels through the streets of Paris to see Mary Hawkins.

6OMIS6

A majestic three-storey mansion, currently displaying its internal disorder with subtlety. All the shutters are tightly closed, and no servant circles around the front door - all this an attempt to, fight prying eyes.

8HAWKINS ESTATE INTERNATIONAL - CHAMBRE DE MARY - JOUR8

Close-up of a letter being written. Then on MARY HAWKINS sitting at a bedside table, scribbling on a piece of paper.

Claire enters the dark cave-like room, her drapery tight. Mary rushes to hide what she's working on, but quickly gives up hesitation when she sees it's Claire.

MARIE
Claire !

Mary runs to Claire, wrapping her in her arms of joy.

Mary (continued)
Uncle Silas allowed you in?

CLAIRE
He has no idea I'm here. I managed to convince your aunt that a medical examination is an urgent matter.

MARIE
He refuses to let me out of the house. And he insists that I leave Paris once I recover.

Mary returns to the office, hurriedly finishing her letter.

I was so relieved to hear that Jamie and Murtagh had been released. But will you do me the favor of handing this over to the authorities of the Bastille? (subject: the letter) The details of the attack... explaining Alex's innocence.

CLAIRE
Of course, I will see it delivered immediately.

MARIE
T-thank you. Alex is a good man, with a good heart. You know, of course, my feelings for him.

CLAIRE
I understand. How do you feel?

MARIE
Ashamed. Like I'm a different person n-now. And I will never be the same again.

CLAIRE
You don't have to be ashamed. What happened is not your fault.

Claire extends her hand, placing a warm hand on Mary's.

CLAIRE (continued)
How do you feel physically?

Claire examines Mary's face, turning the pale girl towards the singular sunbeam of the room.

MARIE
I... bled a little, but it stopped.

CLAIRE
This is normal. I brought herbs that will help.

Claire places the corrective bottles next to Mary's bed.

CLEAR (continued)
They should be brewed in hot water, and once the infusion cools, you can apply it with a cloth.

Mary takes Claire's instructions with quick nods, but her mind is clearly focused elsewhere.

MARIE
(dropping) Will I have a baby?

CLAIRE
No, I don't think so. Your attacker, he couldn't... Finish.

MARIE
I'm so grateful for everything you've done, Claire. At least now they can't force me to marry this awful man, the Viscount. Uncle says he would never take a soiled bride.

CLAIRE
And good riddance to him. You are far too pretty, not to say sweet, for such a warty old thing.

MARIE
I just know that once released, Alex will come back to me. We hope to get married.

This information hits Claire hard, as Mary seals and delivers the letter to Claire.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
Marriage? When Mary mentioned Alex Randall at the hospital, I thought it was nothing more than a girl's crush... If Alex and Mary were to get married, what would happen to the bloodline that Mary and Jack Randall are supposed to provide? What happens to Frank?

OFF Claire's pensive face, her mind plunged into turmoil...

9JAMIE & CLAIRE'S INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON9

Claire stands alone in front of the large stone hearth, Mary's missive in her hand. Immersed in his thoughts, his eyes pour over the letter, illuminated by the light of the fire.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
Did I hold the key to Frank's existence in the palm of my hand? Could I simply loosen my grip, dispose of the letter, and allow fate to carry out its plan?

Claire's arm begins to lower, the paper is now dangerously close to licking the flame.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
But could I sentence Alex Randall to prison without the utmost certainty that it would ensure Frank's existence?

And while Claire weighs this seemingly impossible enigma...

10INT. JARED'S WINE WAREHOUSE - DAY - ONE WEEK LATER10

Jamie and Murtagh are huddled in a silent conversation as the WORKERS roll large barrels of wooden wine.

MURTAGH
St. Germain was pretty easy to follow. But I didn't see anything suspicious.

Not the news Jamie was hoping to hear.

JAMIE
And did you learn anything at Maison Elise?

MURTAGH
A boy told me about several clients, gang members. Masked men, called "The Disciples"
Aristocrats who prowl the streets in search of prey.

JAMIE
Claire said the attackers spoke well and wore nice clothes.

MURTAGH
Yes. What about the right of entry to this gang? A virgin. Mary was a virgin, wasn't she?

Jamie confirms with a dark nod. They are interrupted by the FOREMAN of the warehouse.

FOREMAN
The new shipment has arrived. We should sample it.

JAMIE
Start without me. I will join you later.

FOREMAN
Very good.

As the foreman walks away, Murtagh shakes his head, full of guilt and self-hatred that he has been carrying since the attack. He looks exhausted.

JAMIE
You look tired, sleep a little. (Before Murtagh's silence) What's wrong?

MURTAGH
I let you down.

JAMIE
You didn't do anything like that.

MURTAGH
You have given me confidence, vore wife and your unborn child. And the English lassie too...

JAMIE
You were outnumbered.

MURTAGH
I can't stand the shame of what happened in this alley...

Murtagh walks away, tormented.

JAMIE
So stay after him. If St. Germain was behind, we must connect him to the Disciples.

MURTAGH
I will only put vengeance at your feet or I will be damned.

Jamie puts a hand on Murtagh's shoulder. He knows he will.

PRINCE CHARLES (O.C.)
James, my good man!

The two men turn to see Prince Charles slide towards them with royal confidence. Murtagh comes out, a superficial nod to the Prince as they pass by. No love lost between the two.

JAMIE
Your Royal Highness.

PRINCE CHARLES
The feminine mist that once clouded my mind has dissipated. Open a bottle of your best Burgundy! I have great news!

Jamie moves to a nearby crate, his mind wandering as he chooses the appropriate bottle to quench his growing worry.

JAMIE Does this have to do with your English investors?

Jamie opens the wine and pours two large glasses.

PRINCE CHARLES
Make no mention of these English scoundrels. They showed their true colors. (raising his glass) What if I told you that we are about to come into possession of ten thousand pounds sterling?

JAMIE
I would say... That is what we have been waiting for.

PRINCE CHARLES
I sent a letter to my father informing him of our good fortune. Mark me, James, the king led a gloomy life. But now I am ready to lay at his feet the most precious gift in the world. The British throne.

JAMIE
Who offers us such a prize?

PRINCE CHARLES
The Count Saint-Germain.

The prince does not notice Jamie's reaction to the mention of the Count.

PRINCE CHARLES (continued)
He is ready to buy a large cargo of Portuguese Madeira. However, the Count is short of funds and needs a business partner!

JAMIE
So what does the Count need?

PRINCE CHARLES(
with exaltation) I got a bank loan to provide half of the funds needed to purchase the shipment. Once we sell the wine, we make a considerable profit.

JAMIE
Not enough to fund an army.

PRINCE CHARLES
But enough to start securing ships, weapons, fighting men for our Holy Cause! And when your friend Duverney sees what we're accomplishing, he'll have proof to King Louis that it's a worthwhile investment.

Charles takes a sip of his wine.

PRINCE CHARLES (continued)
With French money, we will bring the clans together -- the Macdonalds, the Camerons, the Mackinnons and, yes, James, your own Frasers as well. And I will lead them all to the gates of London, and to glory!

JAMIE
Good news indeed, although... the idea of a partnership with St.Germain leaves me uncomfortable.

PRINCE CHARLES
I'm not an idiot, James. I am well aware of his cursed reputation.

JAMIE
Then you heard that he lived in circles of... a heretical nature... demonic even...?

PRINCE CHARLES
Rumors and insinuations! I pay no more attention to it than to rumors about your wife. He does not like our cause, but he is a businessman. And I arranged for you to be the one selling the wine.

JAMIE
Moi ?

PRINCE CHARLES
Who better than you to secure the buyer and keep a watchful eye on St.Germain?

JAMIE
When can we expect this shipment?

PRINCE CHARLES
(with a wave of your hand) Do not torment me with the concerns of the merchants. You will meet St.Germain at Maison Elise to discuss details. (raising his glass) Until the glorious day when the rightful king will sit on the British throne again!

They toast

JAMIE
The glorious day.

Charles sips his wine with delight, while Jamie swallows his glass in one go, nervous.

OFF Jamie, all the hard work he and Claire have done since their arrival in Paris disappearing before his eyes...

11EXT. PUBLIC GARDEN - DAY11

As we TRAVEL through the richly garish botanical splendor of an upper-class Parisian garden, we FIND Claire and ALEX RANDALL, walking and talking in deep conversation.

ALEX
I cannot fully express my gratitude for your help. The Bastille was... scary experience...

Claire is not unsympathetic to the young man, but she must be a little harsh here in order to keep him away from Mary.

CLAIRE
I'm sure it was. But now we have to be practical. You must look to the future - Mary told me about your wedding plans.

ALEX
Yes, isn't that wonderful?

CLAIRE Of
course. But, I can't help but wonder about your lack of gainful employment now that the Duke has dismissed you from his service. The news of your arrest will have spread throughout the French nobility... I am concerned about your ability to find another position in Paris.

ALEX
(striking) I thought about going back to England. Mary mentioned that she had family with a farm. Maybe I could find work there...

CLAIRE
Of the same family that sent Mary to France to marry a gentleman of title? I am not sure you will receive a warm welcome from them, let alone employment.

Suddenly, Alex is struck by a brief but violent coughing fit. He pulls out a tissue and wipes his mouth.

ALEX
I beg your pardon.

Claire seizes the opportunity:

CLAIRE
I am also concerned that your condition has not improved over time. I guess you don't want Mary to be stripped of her childhood playing nurse?

This makes Alex stop, struck by his frank words.

ALEX
Of course not.

CLAIRE
It might be prudent to think about what kind of life you could offer her. (out of sight) Sorry. I don't want to complain, but Mary is my friend. She is young and impressionable. My only concern is for his well-being – a concern I hope you share?

ALEX
But of course.

CLAIRE
Next, you may want to put aside your feelings and ask yourself if traveling from city to city looking for a job, living a day-to-day existence, never knowing where tomorrow's meal will come from, is the future she envisions. You need to think realistically about what is best for Mary.

A long pause as the impact of Claire's feeling is felt. The beautiful fantasy Alex had built – life, the future – is crumbling before him.

ALEX
Condemning Mary to a life of misery is something I would never have dreamed of.

Alex looks at the options and makes a decision.

ALEX (continued) I love her enough to want her to have the life she deserves. (then, pained) It's going to be devastated, you know.

Claire places a comforting hand on Alex's.

CLAIRE
Absolutely. She loves you. But she is a strong woman. In time, she will move on.

He is also devastated, but he is convinced that it is for the best.

ALEX
Thank you for your candor, Ms. Fraser. Marie is fortunate to have a friend as caring as you.

With that, Alex leaves.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
It broke my heart to break his. Alex and Mary clearly loved each other, and I stole happiness from them... But what choice did I have? I forced myself to focus on the evidence: Mary Hawkins and Jonathan Randall were to have a child together. I have seen the proof with my own eyes... Alex and Mary just couldn't be. For Frank's sake.

OFF Claire, a feeling of relief mixed with guilt...

12INT. ELISE HOUSE - EVENING12

MADAME ELISE makes her way through the crowd, placing a pair of drinks on a table.

VIEW of Jamie and LE COMTE ST. GERMAIN across the table as they have their drinks.

MRS. ELISE
Will that be all for these gentlemen? Can I give you one of these Ladies? Or maybe two?
Not tonight, Madam.
St. Germain beckons him to leave, he is there on business.

MADAME ELISE

(smiling) As you wish.

Madame Elise walks away. Jamie leans over and talks happily to St.Germain. The lightness of his attitude deliberately contrasts with the seriousness of his words.

JAMIE
I don't want to be gathered in business, or stay in your presence longer than necessary, so let's get to it.

St. Germain responds, equally casual and indifferent, smiling at his enemy as if they were old friends. After all, they are in a public place.

SAINT-GERMAIN
I share your disdain for our association. My memory is flawless. I have not forgotten that your wife tried to ruin me.

JAMIE
Since you mentioned my wife, let me make it clear: someone tried to poison her, then attacked her on the street and raped her friend. My memory is as long as yours. When I find the man responsible, he will die a very slow and painful death.

ST. GERMAIN
Your personal life does not interest me. (then) I will be the only one to get the shipment. It will be secured at my warehouse until you have buyers in place. Contact me then and not before. Only then will we meet again.

St. Germain takes a few coins out of his pocket and throws them on the table before going out.

13INT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S APARTMENT - SALON - NUIT13

While Claire and Jamie have a drink...

JAMIE
If this wine business is successful and The Prince manages to get other investors, I have no doubt that he will immediately head to Scotland.

CLAIRE
So it's simple: Charles must not get his hands on this money. We need to find a way to dispose of this cargo before it is sold.

JAMIE
(facetious) Maybe Saint-Germain will do us a favor and bring in another ship infected with smallpox.

The wheel is turning for Claire. After a while, Jamie reads his face.

JAMIE (continued)
I know that look, Sassenach. But I was just joking about smallpox.

CLAIRE
(a gleam in the eye) I disagree.

JAMIE
You have a bottle of smallpox in your potions, don't you?

CLEAR
Not the actual disease. But there may be herbs that can give the impression that smallpox is present in the crew of St. Germain. Let us convince everyone that the shipment is contaminated and must be destroyed.

JAMIE
Is such a thing even possible?

CLAIRE
I'll look into that tomorrow.

JAMIE
Don't forget that we are expected at the Royal Stables. I agreed to help the Duke buy horses.

CLAIRE
Is it tomorrow? You owe this man no favors, Jamie.

JAMIE
But I don't want to be the object of his favor either.

A beat. Jamie goes to the office. He rummages through a drawer and comes out with a decorative box hidden there.

JAMIE (continued)
I was waiting for a good time to surprise you with this...

He hands the box to Claire, she opens it. Inside rest a set of TWELVE SILVER SPOONS, each with a specially carved rod, in the shape of an apostle.

CLEAR
How unique. What is it?

JAMIE
These are apostle spoons. One for each of the twelve apostles. A baptismal gift, for the bairn.

CLAIRE
(touched) Where did you get them?

JAMIE
They have been passed down in my family for years. I wrote to Jenny when we arrived, telling her of our good news and asking for the spoons for our little bairn. She said she was so excited that she could barely keep the pen stable in her hand.

Jamie also produces a small bottle of whisky.

JAMIE (continued)
She sent this too, said you'd need it when the time came. She said you would know what she meant.

Claire smiled, remembering Maggie's birth. She is silent while she studies spoons. One way or another, the tangible gift in his hands brings home the reality of the child who is on the way.

CLAIRE
I know this sounds ridiculous, but I can't help but wonder if I'll be a good mother.

JAMIE
Of course you will be!

CLAIRE
I am a nurse. So I know how to give birth, how to feed them, how to take care of them when they are sick... But it's not being a mother. I have only a vague memory of my own mother... nothing to guide me... my God, Jamie, what if I'm terrible?

JAMIE
You won't be terrible. I know that.

CLAIRE
Comment?

JAMIE
I know it – just like I knew Jenny would be a good mother.

CLAIRE
Your sister is natural. Seeing her with Jamie and Maggie...

JAMIE
-- has nothing to do with seeing her before. A hell she was. Without an ounce of maternal feeling or instinct.

CLAIRE
Or at least none that her brother could see.

JAMIE
Or that she could see in herself. She was worried about the same things you did. Worried about not knowing how to mother and care and so on... but I never doubted it. I knew it was in her nature to be a kind and loving mother... Just as I see it in you, Mo Nighean Donn. The things you don't know, you will learn. We will learn. Together. Remember, this is just the first of many.

Claire smiled back now, feeling better.

CLAIRE
Oh, is that true?

JAMIE
One for each spoon.

CLAIRE
Do you want twelve children?

JAMIE
Why not?

CLEAR MY
God...

JAMIE
Let's go to bed.

He smiles and kisses her neck, and Claire smiles in spite of herself...

14OMIS14

15EXT. VERSAILLES - MATIN15

Foundation. In all its opulent glory.

16EXT. VERSAILLES - ROYAL STABLES - DAY16

Claire and Jamie approach the large, well-appointed stable where twelve of the king's Spanish horses are on display.
Other nobles and servants walk around. Jamie enjoys the environment with childlike pleasure, breathing deeply into the mixture of horse, harness and manure.

JAMIE
I miss the smell of a stable.

CLAIRE
This makes one of us happy. .

Just then, THE DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM spotted them.

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
Jamie, my boy! And your radiant wife... My dear, your condition only enhances your ravishing beauty...

He takes her hand and kisses her gallantly.

CLAIRE
I may be sick.

The Duke drops his hand quickly.

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
Oh?

CLAIRE
Nothing contagious. But excuse me, gentlemen... I would like fresher air.

Claire and Jamie AD LIB bid farewell as she makes a quick exit.

17EXT. VERSAILLES - STABLES/GARDENS - DAY17

Claire leaves the stable with relief and drinks in the fresh air. There's plenty of activity here, with guests crowding around various tables and servants offering refreshments. She grabs a glass of water on a passing tray and puts a certain distance between her and the stables.

18EXT. VERSAILLES - ROYAL STABLES - DAY18

Sandringham and Jamie walk along the row of beautiful horses that are tied or held by groomsmen.

JAMIE
Now there is a beautiful specimen.

Jamie runs his hands along the side of one of the horses.

JAMIE (continued)
A fair and strong back. Straight legs and sound in the hip. Yes, it is great, Your Grace.

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
Excellent, this one will do. (then) I was very unhappy to hear of your legal woes - and after such a good dinner. The Bastille... I tremble just thinking about it.
Sandringham shuddered at the very thought. They move on to another horse. Jamie runs his hands down the horse's legs.

JAMIE
This one... (to himself in Gaelic)... Not good. (explains to the Duke) In poor condition. Spend. I only spent a few hours at the Bastille. Other poor demons have been there for decades...

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM

Yes, well, life can be hard.

19EXT. VERSAILLES - GARDENS - DAY19

Claire takes a bite to eat at a table surrounded by a group of COURTIERS, chatting with the latest gossip. Claire manages to discreetly disengage from the group, seeking some solitude by heading to a secluded area of the gardens.

ANNALISE (O.C.)
Mrs Broch Tuarach, what a pleasure!
Claire turns around to find ANNALISE DE MARILLAC [Jamie's blonde acquaintance she met in Versailles in episode 202].

CLAIRE
It's a joy to see you again, Annalise.
ANNALISE
I was just going for a walk in the gardens. Will you join me?
It will be with pleasure.
Going for a walk with Jamie's ex may not be a "pleasure" exactly, but Claire smiles when they start walking...

20EXT. VERSAILLES - ROYAL STABLES - DAY20

Back with Jamie and the Duke, descending the row of horses.

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
It may please you to know that your dinner wasn't a wasted effort, Jamie. This allowed me to take the measure of your Prince.

JAMIE
And what was your assessment?

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
In my opinion... He's an absolute moron.

Music to Jamie's ears, but he keeps appearances.

JAMIE
Well, I'm sorry to hear your opinion on The Prince is such.

DUC DE SANDRINGHAM
(sharp) I imagine you are. Especially since you seem to have committed yourself to his service.

Seeking to deflect, Jamie walks to the next horse, grabs him by the muzzle and separates his lips to examine his teeth - the measure of a horse's age.

JAMIE
They claim he's a three-year-old, but by the appearance of his teeth, he's seen a few seasons more than that.

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
Your knowledge amazes me. But I wonder how someone who is such a good judge of horsemeat can be such a bad judge of men.

JAMIE
I see the Prince for what he is. But his father is the real king.

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
It's noble

JAMIE(
re: another horse) Now, here is really a beautiful stallion.

DUKE OF SANDRINGHAM
I really should see a little more. I am a man who likes to have several Options. Isn't it?

Jamie nods, as they move on to the next horse...

21EXT. VERSAILLES - GARDENS - DAY21

Claire and Annalise are walking in the garden.

ANNALISE
Tell me, you lived in Scotland. Do you find life there simpler?

CLEAR
In some ways. Not in others. Politics and manipulations between clans and lairds can sometimes rival even the intrigues of Versailles.

ANNALISE
James was never a man of intrigue, at least not at that time. He was direct. Honest. Simple.

CLAIRE
I wouldn't call Jamie simple.

ANNALISE
Not today, now he's a businessman... (with disgust) ... politics. Just like everyone else. It saddens me to think of him like that.

CLAIRE
He's still Jamie... I doubt he will ever lose sight of who he is deep down.

ANNALISE
When I met him, he was impulsive. Stubborn.

CLAIRE
He still is.

ANNALISE
Ah, but when I met him, he was a boy. You turned him into a man. (then) Speaking of men, there's a rather dashing one out there watching us. He seems very busy with you. (then) Here it is now...

Claire turns around with a smile – which freezes on her face as her heart is suddenly gripped by an ice fist. CAPTAIN BLACK JACK RANDALL approaches her with a look of astonishment.

JACK RANDALL
Claire...?

Claire and Jack look at each other, and it's hard to say who's more surprised right now. A sincere smile spreads on Jack's face.

JACK RANDALL (continued)
You... Never fail to amaze me.

Claire can't find the words right now and Jack is just as stunned, so it's up to Annalise to break the moment.

ANNALISE
I guess you are both acquaintances?

JACK RANDALL
Absolutely. Let me introduce myself...

He takes off his hat and bows - with a grimace of noticeable pain.

JACK RANDALL (continued)
Captain Jonathan Wolverton Randall, Squire, of Her Britannic Majesty's 8th Dragoons. At your service, Madam.
He straightens up, again with difficulty.

ANNALISE
Annalise de Marillac. It is a pleasure to meet you. (switches to English) Are you suffering, Captain?
JACK RANDALL
I had an accident some time ago.

Claire finally manages to get out of the shock.

CLAIRE
Excuse me, I don't feel well all suddenly, I think I'm going home.

But before Claire can escape...

ANNALISE
I'm so sorry, my dear. I'll call your husband.

CLEAR
No. It will not be necessary.

But before Claire can finish her sentence, Annalise hurries to find Jamie, and Claire is stuck with Jack.

JACK RANDALL
Jamie... He's here? Where?

CLEAR
You should leave before he sees you and slashes your throat.

Jack quickly glances around the field, looking for any signs of Jamie.

JACK RANDALL
That would be a deadly mistake. Drawing a sword in the presence of the king is punishable by death.

Since Jack isn't going anywhere, Claire tries to walk away. Randall steps forward abruptly, blocking his way.

CLAIRE
Get out of my way.

But Jack stays where he is, wanting to wait for Jamie and smiling in astonishment.

JACK RANDALL
It's amazing. Fates are playing with us now – putting our feet on seemingly divergent paths that still converge in one way or another in the most unlikely places?

Claire tries to leave again, but Jack grabs her arm.

JACK RANDALL (continued)
Claire, surely you can get out of the passions of the moment to appreciate the sublime absurdity of a universe that would guide us to a meeting at the French court?

CLAIRE
Let go of me.

He looks at her calmly, his amusement still evident. Then slowly let go of his arm.

JACK RANDALL
(weak) The king...?

CLEAR
Let him go to hell.

Jack bows to someone from O.C., and Claire turns around to see that King Louis has arrived, assisted by THREE GUARDS, and his retinue of ADVISORS. Claire has no choice but to rush in and hope he hasn't heard that last remark.

KING LOUIS
Mrs. Fraser, it pleases the King to see you again.
CLAIRE
To me too, Your Majesty.
Louis looks at Jack with a questioning look, who in turn turns to Claire. It takes her a beat to realize that protocol requires her to make the introduction. [NOTE: We will assume that Clare was officially introduced to the king at some point.]

CLAIRE
May I introduce to Your Majesty Jonathan Wolverton Randall, Squire and Captain of the 8th Dragoons Company of His Majesty the King of Great Britain?
KING Louis
Captain Randall. Welcome to Versailles.
JACK RANDALL
Thank you, Your Majesty. It is an honour to be here.
The attendants smiled at his accent, but Louis silenced them.

KING LOUIS
Don't do anything about it. (transition to English) You will forgive the rudeness of these children, Captain. The French language is not easily mastered by English.
JACK RANDALL
I was not offended, Sire.

ROI LOUIS
(directing) Oh! But perhaps the king himself offended you, Mrs. Fraser, I assure you that your accent is impeccable as always.

He takes her hand and kisses her gallantly. He is obviously in love with her, glancing gratefully at her figure.

CLAIRE
Your Majesty is too good.
Louis continues to hold her hand a little too long.

VIEW OF JAMIE Who has just come out of the stables and is looking for Claire. He looks around for a few seconds before seeing her talking with the king - then he sees Jack Randall. Jamie's face darkens and he starts walking quickly towards them...

BACK TO CLAIRE, JACK AND THE KING who turned his attention to Jack.

KING LOUIS
The king admires your uniform, captain. So rarely seen at his court. Such bold colors... as befits the brave soldiers of your sovereign. Too bad your compatriots are usually too busy killing each other to exchange such jokes.

JACK RANDALL
As a soldier for many years, I must say that I find war preferable to politics. At least in wartime, you know your enemy.

KING LOUIS
The king finds some truth in what you say. However, we hope that your affection for the carnage will not prove fatal for you.

VIEW OF JAMIE Getting closer, his hand now on his sword hilt...

RESUME WITH CLAIRE, JACK AND THE KING Who still speak.

KING LOUIS (continued)
Are you and the captain friends, Madam?

CLAIRE
We know each other.

KING LOUIS Doesn't
that present difficulties with your husband? After all, he is a proud Scottish warrior and a great supporter of my cousin's rightful claim to the British throne. (to Jack) Or maybe you haven't met Lord Broch Tuarach?

The king beckons to O.C. and they all turn to see Jamie standing there, his hand still on his sword. Claire turns white. Jack stiffened, his own hand gently going to the hilt of his sword. But Jamie smiled widely.

JAMIE
The captain and I have met several times, Your Majesty. (to Jack) Are you all right? I've heard that you had an unfortunate encounter with some... Sheep, aren't they?

JACK RANDALL
Cattle, actually.

JAMIE
But now you've recovered?

JACK RANDALL
Yes. I still have a little trouble getting out of bed on cold mornings.

JAMIE
Really? Well, I understand that the weather here in Paris is going to stay pretty warm all week.

JACK RANDALL
There is no need to worry about my health.

JAMIE
I'm delighted to hear it like this.

Claire intervenes and takes Jamie firmly by the other arm and moves closer to him, wanting to put a little more physical distance between the two men.

CLAIRE
tell us why you are here,
captain?

JACK RANDALL
I come to ask for mercy for my brother. Until recently, he was in the service of the Duke of Sandringham – I am here to ask His Grace to reconsider his position.

KING LOUIS
Maybe you should beg.

Jack looks at him sharply - a little too abruptly.

JACK RANDALL
Begging?

KING LOUIS
Yes. On your knees. To ask such a favor from a man like the Duke would not be possible. Begging him, however, is another matter. On your knees.

The king stares at him and Jack suddenly realizes that they are all looking at him. Right now? The king's guards are here and they are watching him closely. And after a beat, Jack falls to his knees in front of the king who is waiting for a while... then laughs.
KING LOUIS (continued)
Not now! Oh! You English are so literal!

The whole sequel laughs and Claire seizes the opportunity to get out of there.

CLAIRE
Your Majesty, I am not feeling well. May I withdraw, with your permission?
KING LOUIS
Of course, of course. Rest, Ms. Fraser.
Looking at Jack with some amusement...

KING LOUIS
The king gives you permission to stand. It would be a shame to stain such pretty panties.

The king walks away, still laughing at his joke. Claire takes Jamie by the arm as Jack slowly stands up, burning silently with humiliation.

VIEW OF CLAIRE & JAMIE moving away.

JAMIE
Are you really sick, Sassenach? Is it the baby?

CLEAR
No. No, I'm fine.

JAMIE
Are you sure?

CLEAR
Yes. I just wanted us to...

JAMIE
So wait here.

He drops his arm and turns around, walking quickly from where they came.

VIEW OF Claire, as she watches Jamie go all the way to Randall. The two men have a short but seemingly pleasant conversation. In the end, the two men bow deeply and formally to each other, and Jamie returns to Claire as Jack goes his own way.

CLAIRE
What happened?? What did you say?

JAMIE
I challenged him to a duel, and he agreed. He said he owed me a death.

He smiles, takes her arm and guides her.

22TRANSPORT EXT./INT. - DAY - LATER22

The car travels through the streets of Paris as a long anguished silence flows between Jamie and Claire. The only sound is that of horses' hooves beating like a drumbeat. Jamie watches the landscape pass by with a satisfied and happy look on his face. But Claire's mind falters, desperately looking for a way to prevent this duel from happening, as Frank and Black Jack's irreconcilably linked thoughts in time fill her head...

23EXT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S APARTMENT - JOUR23

The car arrives at the house.

24EXT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S APARTMENT - COURTYARD - DAY24

The car barely stops in the yard before Jamie gets out. He jumps positively out of the car and naturally assumes the follow-up of Claire behind him without a look back. Fergus runs out the front door, excited to greet them home, but Jamie stops the boy before he gets a word.

JAMIE
Great day Fergus my boy!

FERGUS
Really?

JAMIE
You have no idea. Run and go get Murtagh.

FERGUS
Yes, Milord.

Fergus runs away to do as he is told, and Jamie disappears inside the apartment, his mind fixed on the task at hand. Claire struggles to think, her breath becoming frantic. After a beat, her eyes suddenly light up and she jumps into the car again.

CLAIRE
(shouting at the coachman) Take me to the Bastille at full speed!

25EXT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S APARTMENT - NUIT25

Later that night. Foundation.

26JAMIE & CLAIRE'S INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT - ROOM - NIGHT26

Jamie sharpens his broadsword as he and Murtagh discuss the details of the duel.

MURTAGH
I'll sort out the details with his second. Since he has been challenged, it is up to Randall to choose the weapons.

JAMIE
Oui.

Murtagh's eyes fall on Jamie's sword with a scowl.

MURTAGH
What if he chose pistols?

JAMIE
He won't take guns. It's too fast and too far away. He wants to look me in the eye too much.
MURTAGH
Yes, but make no mistake in judging the man's skills. You can't be a Dragon Captain without knowing how to wield a blade.

CLAIRE (O.C.)
There will be no duel.

Jamie and Murtagh turn around to find an exhausted Claire.

CLAIRE (continued)
Black Jack is locked up in the Bastille.

JAMIE
On what charge?

CLAIRE
Mine. I swore that he was responsible for the attack on Mary and me.

Jamie didn't see it coming. Neither did Murtagh.

MURTAGH
Christ, woman, what have you done?

CLAIRE
Murtagh, please...

JAMIE
Are you crazy? Swearing a false accusation...

CLAIRE
They won't be able to hold it for long, and I'll say I must have been wrong. But that's enough time for you to listen to me. You can't go all the way, Jamie.

Jamie is barely able to look at his wife as a wave of betrayal and unimaginable questions invades him.

JAMIE
Why are you doing such a thing, Claire?

CLAIRE
The duel is forbidden in France. If you're surprised, you could spend the rest of your life behind bars. Or worse. I will not take that risk. You're about to be a father, Jamie. Think of me and your child.

JAMIE
There are places in this city where the people at arms are not present.

MURTAGH
He will not get caught. I will see to it.

CLAIRE
Murtagh, would you please leave? It's between Jamie and me.

Murtagh does so reluctantly.

JAMIE
You gave me a gift Claire, when you told me Randall was alive – to know that I would be the one to end his life. Now I can claim this donation.

CLAIRE
Please listen to me, you can't kill Randall.

JAMIE
Claire, there's no reason...

CLAIRE
(dropping) Because of Frank.

Frank. The name crosses the air like a dagger. Jamie looks up at Claire in utter astonishment, believing that her ears have failed him.

JAMIE
Franc?

CLAIRE
If you kill Jack Randall now, then Frank... It will not exist. He will not be born.

JAMIE
What are you talking about?

CLAIRE
Frank showed me her family tree one day... and there was the name of Jack Randall and his wife... Mary Hawkins. Together they are supposed to have a child... this child is Frank's ancestor. If you kill Black Jack before he has a child with Mary... Frank will never exist. It will be as if you killed him too.

Jamie looks at her like she's crazy – and right now, Claire isn't too sure he'd be wrong about this assessment.

CLAIRE (continued)
It... It's supposed to happen. It's... part of the story.

JAMIE
I thought we were here to change history.

CLAIRE
Frank is innocent in all this. You can't kill an innocent man!

JAMIE
Innocent?

CLAIRE
He committed no crime against both of us.

JAMIE
And for that Jack Randall should live?! (then) Yes. I can bear a lot. More than most. I proved it. But do I have to put up with everyone's weakness? Can't I have mine?

Claire moves towards him, but Jamie paces.

JAMIE

(curse in Gaelic) Donas dubh nan seachd sitigean!

Before Claire can speak...

JAMIE (continued)
You can't ask me that, Claire. You were there... You saw what he did to me.

Claire is all too familiar with the images swirling in Jamie's mind, and she struggles to keep her own emotions at bay. But before she can speak, Jamie quickly draws his knife from his belt and pushes the grip into Claire's hand.

JAMIE (continued)
You have a choice. Him or me? I don't want to live while Randall lives. If I can't kill him, then kill me now!

Jamie shakes Claire's hand, forcing her grip around the knife. It's too much as Claire finally bursts into tears, throwing the knife.

CLAIRE
A delay is all I ask. One year. The child -- Randall's, he will be conceived by then. After that, I will help you bleed the bastard myself!

No answer from Jamie. Claire's anger begins to rise.

CLAIRE (continued)
You owe me a lot, Jamie Fraser. I saved your life, not once but twice. You owe me a life.

This attracts Jamie's attention, forcing him to meet Claire's sobbing eyes.

JAMIE
I see. And you're claiming your debt now?

CLAIRE
I can't reason with you any other way!

JAMIE
Jesus God, Claire! Would you stop me from taking revenge on the man who made me play whore for him? The man who lived in my nightmares and in our bed? The man who almost made me commit suicide? (then) You know I'm a man of honor. I pay my debts. So tell me now, is this what you're asking me? To pay you with the life of Black Jack Randall?

The questions are there, and Claire has no choice but to answer:

CLEAR
Yes.

Jamie looks at her. He takes his knife and puts it back in its sheath.

JAMIE
One year. Not another day.

Claire moves towards him, needing to connect. But Jamie's icy words stop him:

JAMIE (continued)
Don't touch me.

Claire pulls back, looking tearn from her lungs.

WIDE SHOT, husband and wife on either side and the room suddenly appearing incredibly large.

And OFF Jamie and Claire, a break between them like never before...

CROSSFADE.
