Season 2 Episode 13

"Dragonfly in amber"

WRITTEN BY

TONI GRAPHIA ET MATTHEW B. ROBERTS

FADE TO A scene from "THE AVENGERS", the popular British spy series of the 1960s. As John Steed and Emma Peel indulge in witty jokes during an impromptu fencing match in the episode "The Town of No Return," return to REVEAL -

1WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - DAY (968)1

A group of children gathered around an old black-and-white TV, where "The Avengers" plays on screen. ROGER WAKEFIELD, handsome young man, late 20s, dressed in a dark suit, is pensive, looking with the children. After a beat, the housekeeper, FIONA GRAHAM (19), gives Roger a slight elbow, breaking his stupor.

FIONA
You should really come back to your guests. They keep asking you.

Roger nods, accepts his fate and returns to...

2WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - SALON - DAY (1968)2

The room is crowded with guests. There are refreshments and food. Roger is now in the center of the room, talking with Mr. & Mrs. Berrow (60's). Mrs. Berrow takes Roger's hand.

MRS. BERROW
Your father was such a lovely man. I will always remember his sense of humour.

ROGER
Thank you.

Mr. BERROW
The Reverend has helped so many people. He will be greatly missed.

Roger nods, heartbroken by the death of his father, the Reverend Reginald Wakefield, who was buried earlier today.

The VOICES OVERLAP NOW, pouring Roger like waves: I'm so sorry for your loss. It must have been a big shock. At least he lived a long life. He's in a better place now.

Roger suddenly feels like he's drowning.

He looks over the top and sees a tall, striking YOUNG WOMAN with thick ROUX hair worn loosely on his shoulders, standing across the room, looking at him carefully. But his eyesight is obscured by other grieving people and he can't really look at it well.

ROGER
(to the Berrows) Do you want to excuse me for a moment?

Slowly, he walks towards the woman, whose shimmering red hair stands out in the sea of dark clothes. He exchanges condolences with other supporters along the way.

ROGER (continued) (to other bereaved people)
Thank you... Thank you... Excuse me... Let's talk about it later... Excuse me, please... (etc.)

He looks up and now finds that he has lost sight of the young woman. Where did she go? He turns around... -- finds himself looking at the face of BRIANNA RANDALL, who may well be the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.
His bright eyes focus regularly and deeply on his own, and for a moment he is a deer caught in the headlights.

BRIANNA
Are you Roger Wakefield?

ROGER
Yes. Definitely. This is me. Yes. Uh, I'm afraid I didn't have the fun...?

Before she could answer, another woman's voice sounded.

FEMALE VOICE...
Roger?

He turns around to see -- CLAIRE RANDALL, now 40. Always beautiful, with her high cheekbones, a wealth of curly brown hair, with a touch of gray on the edges, and those extraordinary BLUE EYES.

CLAIRE
Is that you?

He doesn't recognize her...

BRIANNA
It's him.

CLAIRE
I can't believe it... after all these years.
Claire smiled when she saw the boy become a man.
ROGER
I'm sorry, but do I know you?
CLAIRE
You wouldn't remember me, the last time I saw you, you were seven or eight years old. I'm Claire Randall -- I was an old friend of your father's. I was devastated to hear of his passing, I am so sorry.
ROGER
Thank you.
CLAIRE
I see you have met my daughter.
We now realize that the young woman is the daughter of Claire -- the daughter of Claire and Jamie -- Brianna Randall, 20 years old.
ROGER
Actually no, we have not been formally introduced.
BRIANNE
Brianna. The girl.

She holds out her hand and Roger takes her.

ROGER
A pleasure... Miss Randall.

CLAIRE
We were in London visiting relatives when we heard. His heart, I understand?

ROGER
... Yes. Very sudden. (a little emotional) I had just seen him at Christmas and he was in a good mood.

CLAIRE
I hadn't seen the Reverend in many years. I loved him very much.

BRIANNA
Papa too.

There's the slightest accent on "Daddy," which then causes a silent gaze between Claire and Brianna, something just beneath the crackling surface between mother and daughter.
CLEAR
Yes. My late husband - Frank - they were very close.

ROGER
Randall. Frank Randall. Of course.

Roger stops... Remembers.

ROGER (continued)
I remember you now, Claire. Yes, you are... a nurse, if I remember correctly.

CLAIRE
(modestly) Yes, I was... I'm a doctor now.

BRIANNA
A surgeon.

Bree doesn't brag, there's another slight digging into her tone.

CLAIRE
Bree and I came from the United States.

ROGER(
ref: Brianna) I thought I detected an American accent.

BRIANNA
Boston to be exact.

CLAIRE
She is a history student at Harvard.

ROGER
Really? I am on leave from the history department at Oxford.

BRIANNA
That's great.

CLAIRE Is
Mrs. Graham still employed by the Reverend? I haven't seen it yet.

ROGER
Unfortunately, we lost it a few years ago. But his granddaughter Fiona is here somewhere.

CLAIRE
So many things are the same, but so much has changed. Would you mind if I looked around the house? There are many memories here.

With that, Claire left. Roger finds himself lost in Brianna's eyes again. He rallies after a beat, tries to engage it in some way.

ROGER
First time in Scotland then?

BRIANNA
Uh-huh.

ROGER
Will you have time to enjoy the view during your stay?

BRIANNA
We only came for the day so my mom could pay tribute to her. We are supposed to go back to London tonight.

ROGER
Oh. That's too bad. Beautiful wild country...

Brianna looks out the window.

BRIANNA
: Of course, plans can change... I have always been curious about Scotland. It was... A special place for my parents... both my parents.

Roger's hopes are raised, but Fiona comes back to him. She's pretty, with kind eyes like her grandmother Mrs. Graham, and it's clear she loves Roger.

FIONA
I beg your pardon, but it is time.

ROGER
Yes of course. Thank you, Fiona. (to Brianna) Excuse me for a moment?

Brianna nods as Roger walks away and there is a quick look between her and Fiona, as the two women compete against each other.

ANGLE ON CLEAR

As she wanders around the room, connecting with the objects in it, as she recalls. She runs her hand along the dark wood mantle... the back of the chair in which she sat once and read books while Frank and the Reverend talked about the Jacobites.

She looks over the fireplace, the portrait of a solitary deer against the wild mountains of Scotland. And a framed SCOTTISH FLAG engraved with the words: Nemo me impune lacessit - "No one attacks me with impunity." The Latin motto of the royal Stuart dynasty.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
Mrs. Graham had warned me not to spend my days chasing a ghost. And so I hadn't. But now that I was here, the ghosts were starting to chase me.

CLING CLING CLING, someone taps a fork on a glass and the room calms down. Roger addresses the guests.

ROGER
Thank you all for coming. It would have meant a lot to my father. And if you knew him, you know he wasn't one to leave anything to chance, including toasting in his own wake.

He raises his glass, the guests follow suit.

ROGER (continued)
"To death! The cheerful old bouncer now. Our glasses, clicks; If he hadn't put others out, I thought, Tonight we wouldn't be drinking.

A chorus of laughter with the reverend's sense of humor. Claire smiles, but she is lost in thought.

SHOT OF BRIANNA looking at her mother's face.

3WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - SALON - LATE AFTERNOON (1968)3

Things end, guests leave. Roger is at the door, seeing everyone outside. Claire and Brianna approach him.

CLAIRE
We should go.

ROGER
(glancing at his watch) Not going all the way to London? At this time?

CLAIRE
We were going to drive as far as we could and stay in a pub for the night.

Roger glances at Brianna. There's something about this girl, he just met her, but he doesn't want her to leave.

ROGER
There is plenty of room here if you wish to stay.

CLAIRE
We couldn't impose...

ROGER
You wouldn't be. In fact, I would be happy. It's a big house.

BRIANNA
It seems better than rushing to the wrong side of the road in the dark. Also, give me a chance to enjoy the view - it's supposed to be a beautiful wild country.

Roger realizes that this is the exact phrase he used, but keeps this reflection to himself. Claire is a little surprised that Brianna is open to staying, but the truth is that she wants to stay too.

CLEAR
OKAY. As long as we are not a disturbance...

ROGER
I'll pick up your bags in the car. The guest bedroom is right in place.

CLAIRE
-- at the top of the stairs on the left. I remember.

Claire smiled as she walked up the stairs, Brianna trailing behind her. She bumps into Fiona on the way and gives her a smile. Fiona is not amused.

4OMIS4

A5EXT. WAKEFIELD HOUSE - NIGHTA5

Foundation.

5WAKEFIELD INT. HOUSE - REVEREND LIBRARY - MIDNIGHT (1968)5

It's the middle of the night. Roger enters, surprised to find someone there. The soft light of a lamp illuminates Claire, sitting on a chair, a GLASS OF WHISKY in hand.

CLAIRE
I couldn't sleep, so I used a dram. I hope you don't mind.

ROGER
Not at all. I'll drink one with you.

Claire isn't the only one not sleeping. Roger pours himself a whiskey, then accompanies it. Dressed casually now, he sits on the couch, relaxes. Lower his drink.

ROGER (continued)
Ah, yes. That's better. (then) I pestered him for years to throw things away and clean up the clutter. Now I can't bear to part with it.

Claire looks around the room, overflowing with BOOKS, JOURNALS, DOCUMENTS and MAPS. Sheet after sheet of aging yellow paper cover all horizontal surfaces. Each corner passed the burst point with personal belongings. With history.

CLAIRE
Lots of history here.

ROGER
Not only that of the family, but also that of Scotland.

Claire notices a few nearby boxes labeled "HIGHLAND CLEARANCES 1746-1748." Lists of clans are scribbled on the sides with magic markers: Chisholm, MacLaren, MacDonald of GlenGarry, Drummond, Livingstone, MacKenzie.

ROGER (continued)
The college here in Inverness asked me to donate their library to their archives.

He takes a few BOOKS off the shelf.

ROGER (continued)
Not sure I'll give everything. He was very fond of several rare editions on Prince Charles Stuart and the Battle of Culloden.

The word cuts like a knife in Claire's heart.

CLAIRE
Culloden.
He misinterprets this as a question.

ROGER
Last battle of The '45. My ancestors fought and died there, actually.

CLAIRE
(piqued interest) Really?

ROGER
Yes, my real name is Roger MacKenzie. My parents were Jerry and Marjorie MacKenzie. The Reverend adopted me after they were killed in World War II.

Claire walks away for a moment.

CLAIRE
Mackenzie... I knew MacKenzies... A long time ago...

Each of them is lost in their own memories for a while.

ROGER
It's a common name here. I can... Asking for something personal? (with his nod) How did you do it? Finally say goodbye... To that person you loved most around the world?

Roger talks about Frank. But Claire thinks of Jamie.

CLAIRE
I would like to know. The truth is, I've never been good at saying goodbye. But it's hell, isn't it? Whether you want to say goodbye or not, they are gone and you must continue to live without them. (almost an aside) Because that's what they would want.

She raises her glass with a sad, bitter smile. Roger studies it, feeling the deep well of pain inside. Claire lowers her glass.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
Thank you for the whisky. Good evening.

Roger nods and she COMES out...

6WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - CLAIRE'S ROOM - LATE AT NIGHT (198)6

Brianna is now asleep, but Claire stands at the window and looks at the moon. Claire walks to where Bree sleeps, her lips curled in a slight smile. Claire studies the girl, her red hair, her cheekbones high, her mouth full, her Fraser eyes slightly tilted.

CLAIRE
(whispers to Bree) God, you look so much like her.

Claire smooths a lock of red hair from Bree's forehead, takes a beat, and then leaves. STAY ON BRIANNA as her eyes open and she looks into the dark wondering what that means.

ZOOM ON BRIANNA'S FACE and... FADE ON:

7THE FACE OF JAMIE FRASER7

Hair, cheekbones, eyes -- cut from the same cloth. Father and daughter, no doubt. REVEAL that we are in...

EXT. MAIN JACOBITE CAMP - CULLODEN HOUSE - DAY (1746)

TITLE CARD: April 16, 1746. 6:00 a.m.

In the field in front of the house, JAMIE FRASER makes his way through a chaotic mess. Hundreds of soldiers in disarray, suffering from exhaustion, hunger and loss of morale after the failure of the march on Nairn the night before [Episode 212].

Next to him is PRINCE CHARLES STUART, who looks worse for wear and tear. They talk about urgency while walking. Jamie is upset about the aborted march.

JAMIE
I'm telling you that the army is not ready for battle today. We must retreat to safer ground before the British realize their advantage and destroy us all.

When they arrive at the main entrance of...

8CULLODEN INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - ENTRANCE - DAY - CONTINUOUS (1746)8

The Prince looks at Jamie as if thinking about his words, then smiles as if he is coming to an important realization.

PRINCE CHARLES
You are my Thomas. (out of Jamie's gaze) It was the apostle Thomas who doubted that the Lord had risen from the dead. Not before feeling the wounds, pressing his fingers where the nails had been... that the Lord said to him, "Because thou hast seen, thou believe; but blessed are those who have not seen and still believe.

Jamie swallows the urge to grab the Prince and shake him.

PRINCE CHARLES (cont'd)
Today is the day, James. And believe me, before this day is over, I will make you a believer.

The Prince turns around and walks to an inner door, a worried Jamie has no choice but to follow.

9CULLODEN INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - ROOM HQ - DAY (1746)9

Jamie and Prince Charles enter where a group of men are already arguing. The high command of the Jacobite army, General George Murray, Quartermaster Colonel John O'Sullivan and clan leaders, including ANDREW MACDONALD and DONALD CAMERON, voices were raised like panicked animals knowing that they were about to be slaughtered.

PRINCE CHARLES(
an announcement) We will stand against the British today on this moor, and we will win.
MURRAY
Your Royal Highness, they are nine thousand. There are less than five of us!

O'Sullivan jumps to Charles' defense as usual.

O ' SULLIVAN
The secret sympathizers of the Cumberland Army will help us.

PRINCE CHARLES
Precisely!

MURRAY
But Sire...

PRINCE CHARLES
I have made my decision! The time for discussion is over!

There you go. The die is cast.

CAMERON
As you order, sir. "For the king and the country!"

MACDONALD
My men will march from the right! Let the Camerons go left!

CAMERON
I'm not going to let a damn MacDonald tell me what to do!

As the two clan leaders lock themselves into a fierce debate, with the generals, Jamie can sense things getting out of hand. Jamie turns to Charles.

JAMIE
As I told you in France, the clans cannot agree on the color of the sky. Well, Sire, I don't know what color it is now... but not everyone involved will dispute - the Culloden moor will flow red with our blood at the end of the day.

Jamie takes one last look at the doomed army's high command, then dives out the door.4

10EXT. CULLODEN HOUSE - DAY - A INSTANT LATER (1746)10

Jamie goes out and finds Claire, who is boiling herbs in the tent.

JAMIE
(in Gaelic)

Good God! (then) It's a blessing that Colum didn't live long enough to see that dark day.

CLAIRE
Le Prince...?

JAMIE
The Battle of Culloden will take place today... as history predicted.

Just then, MURTAGH rushes in with news for Jamie.

MURTAGH
The sentries spotted the vanguard four miles away. Cumberland broke up camp and his army marched along the south side of Kildrummie Moss. The British are here. Zero hour has arrived.

JAMIE
(to Murtagh) goes inside and informs Lord George.

Murtagh leaves. Claire grabs Jamie's arm, frantic.

CLAIRE
There is only one thing left. A possibility.

JAMIE
What is it?

Claire looks around, desperate. The soldiers rush around them, confused and terrified.

CLAIRE
Not here.

Claire goes back to their room, Jamie with her.

SMASH CUT to:

11WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - SALON - MORNING (1968)11

Roger, Claire and Bree have tea. Roger glances at Brianna, always wanting to spend more time with her.

ROGER
I would be happy to show you the sites if you wish.

BRIANNA
I'm sure you have better things to do than play guide.

ROGER
No, just spend the day with mothballs and cobwebs. A little fresh air would do me good.

CLAIRE
I guess it couldn't hurt to stay one more day... or two.

Brianna glances at Claire, that wasn't the plan.

ROGER
Splendid. Let's start with a trip to Loch Ness?

BRIANNA
So we can stay with the rest of the tourists waiting to see algae that we can call a monster? Thanks, no.

ROGER
No algae in the lochs, but I understand your point of view. (thinks fast) All right. Well. You study history, I teach it - are we all going to find history?

He is charming, but Brianna is indifferent to his charms.

BRIANNA
Sure.

CLAIRE
You both go. I would just like to dig around the village, visit some old places that were important to me and... Brianna's father.

They don't know that the father Claire is talking about is not Frank.

15OMIS12-14

15CLAIRE'S CAR - SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS - ROAD - DAY (1968)15

Claire at the wheel, contemplating the Scottish countryside.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
I had a hard time knowing if I should get close... But in the end, it wasn't a decision... It was like a magnet, drawing me home... The first real home I'd ever had...

16EXT. LALLYBROCH - DAY (1968)16

Claire's car slides down the back road, past the lumber yard until you reach LALLYBROCH. She looks out the window at the large stone building. From a distance, it doesn't look that different. But as she stops, parks and exits, she is shocked by the state she is in.

WE FOLLOW CLAIRE as she walks through the courtyard of the door and towards the front steps. As she does so, she hears a flurry of voices in her head: Jenny laughing, children playing, dogs barking, goats bleating, Ian screaming, Mrs. Crook calling everyone for dinner, Rabbi excited by potatoes... A SOUND COLLAGE of LA VIE A LALLYBROCH [from various episodes].

A FADED REAL ESTATE SIGN HUNG near the front door. CONDEMNED WINDOWS. A no-entry sign near the door. Claire went inside, but a large beam and debris blocked all access. So she sits on the porch... Close your eyes...

CLAIRE (V.O.)
I remember Jamie reading me a poem one night in bed. "Come and let us live, my dear, love and never be afraid, what the fathers of the sow, the brightest dyed Soil today, say."

A sound of footsteps approaching on the road. Claire opens her eyes and looks outside. Something catches his attention... a large silhouette, silhouette under L'ARCHE.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
"Live again as happiness tomorrow, but if we, dark sons of pain, fix how long a night, close our eyes of our short light!"

THE VOICE OF JAMIE uses the following verse:

JAMIE (V.O.)
"While the loving kisses inhabit, on our lips, begin and say, a thousand and a hundred scores, a hundred thousand more...
The SILHOUETTE - a large Highlander, wearing full equipment.
Claire looks at him, incredulous. The sun is behind him, so she can't see his face clearly, but she would know him anywhere - it's Jamie. His breath catches in his throat.

SHOT SQUEEZES ON CLAIRE'S FACE as the rain falls on her. She opens her eyes, wakes up. She looks around, disoriented from where she had fallen asleep on Lallybroch's porch. She gets up and looks at the ark where the Highlander was. There is nothing there. She goes back to the car.

A17EXT. HIGHLAND ROAD - JOUR (1968)A17

Foundation. Roger's car is driving on a paved road towards Fort William.

17EXT. FORT WILLIAM - COURTYARD - DAY (1968)17

Roger and Brianna walk through the large empty space in the middle of the old abandoned fortress.

ROGER
Fort William. Built in the 1600s. The Gaelic name is An Gearastan Dubh, "The Black Garrison". It was used by the British as a command post and prison... intended to control "savage clans and wandering barbarians".
Brianna walks alone, looking up at the towering gray stone walls that surround her.

BRIANNA
Military history isn't really my specialty...

ROGER
It was your father's, wasn't it? The Reverend has some of his books in the library.

BRIANNA
One of my earliest memories is dropping an ice cream cone from the ramparts of Fort Ticonderoga as it clung to the heroism of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.

Then they arrive at the WHIP STATION where Jamie was flogged by Black Jack Randall [Episode 106]. It has now been rebuilt, but the weather has taken its toll.

ROGER
Ethan Allen? "I regret having only one life to give... »

BRIANNA
Nathan Hale. Common error.

ROGER
Never quote American history to an American.

BRIANNA
The Revolutionary War is practically a religious text in Boston.

ROGER
With George Washington as messiah and Benedict Arnold as Judas without a doubt.

BRIANNA
Benedict Arnold is a deeply misunderstood historical figure.

ROGER
I thought you didn't like military history.

BRIANNA
(bad Scottish accent) We Randalls are a very complicated clan, boy.

ROGER
It's the worst accent I've ever heard.

She laughs and Roger smiles back - a spark truly shared between them for the first time. It opens up a little more.

BRIANNA
Really... Do you remember my father very well?

ROGER
Pieces. He was nice. He wore his hat dipped over one eye, very dashing. (then) And it seemed... Very nice.

Brianna doesn't say anything for a long beat.

BRIANNA
He was... The nicest man in the world. Kind... sweet... He always found ways to surprise me... to open my eyes to the world... It's a gift he gave me... Don't feel trapped in the present... to always know that I was part of a chain that stretched in the past... and in the future... So even now, even here, I can go back and feel the connection that connects me to him...

A long quiet beat in the empty fortress.

ROGER
Your mother also seems to be a nice woman.

Brianna looks away, her expression hardens slightly.

BRIANNA
My mother... lives in another world.

Then the moment passes and she wraps her arms around her.

BRIANNA (continued)
This place gives me chills.

ROGER
With good reason... A lot of blood has been shed on this ground.

With a last ice at the whip post, they leave the old
fortress.

A18EXT./INT. ROGER’S CAR - DRIVING - DAY (1968)A18

Roger at the wheel, Brianna watching the countryside for a while. Then she turns against him suddenly.

BRIANNA
Do you have any memory of... An "incident" that happened... with my parents when they were here?

ROGER
How do you mean -- "incident?"

BRIANNA
I don't know exactly. Something. Something important happened between them when they were here with your father.
ROGER
(avoidance) I was just a little boy...

She nods and looks away, disappointed but not surprised.

B18EXT. LOCHSIDE - JOURB18

As they walk along the shore...

BRIANNA
Snow in April?

ROGER
is Scotland. The seasons are just suggestions. She does what she wants, when she wants.

Roger decides that he will share what he knows about the incident.

ROGER (continued)
I don't remember all the details, but I remember... finding Mrs. Graham screaming in the tool shed... There were a lot of broken things lying around... I think she said your father lost his temper and broke everything...

Brianna looks back.

BRIANNA
My father broke everything...?

ROGER
Yes... But that wasn't why she was crying, I'm sure.

Brianna is puzzled, but certainly intrigued.

BRIANNA
My father certainly had character, but he wasn't violent (then) When did this happen? In what year?

ROGER
Your mom said I was seven or eight when she last saw me, so it must have been... 1947 or 48.

Something disturbing lands in the pit of Brianna's stomach. It takes him a minute before he decides to take the plunge.

BRIANNA
My father kept a safe on the top shelf of his closet. I knew where he was hiding the key, so one day I opened it. There were letters from your father. I knew I wasn't supposed to read them, but I did. Especially academic stuff... But there was a letter... The Reverend mentioned an "incident" involving my mother and father... And the way he phrased it made me feel like it was... something serious... maybe something terrible... Certainly something he didn't want to state on paper... It scared me for some reason. I put the letter back in the box, locked it, and never looked at it again.

Roger sees an opportunity to bond with her, to fill in some missing pieces. He has an idea.

ROGER
My father kept a diary. He wrote there every night after supper. There are boxes of them in the storage room, if you don't mind being a little dirty.

BRIANNA
I don't mind dirt. You should see my room. (realizes) I shouldn't have said that.

ROGER
No, but I understand what you mean.

They share another smile as they drive back to the car.

18EXT. CITY HALL - INVERNESS - DAY (1968)18

Foundation. Claire's car stops in front of a building where Burgh's files are kept. As she steps inside, Claire sees spray-painted graffiti on a building or other structure: FREE SCOTLAND. The battle never ended. Maybe it never will.

9OMIS19

20INTERNATIONAL CITY HALL - ARCHIVES ROOM - DAY (1968)20

Shortly thereafter, a CLERK is laying DOCUMENTS on a table for her and Claire to review.

CLERC
I traced the chain of title of the estate known as Lallybroch or Broch Tuarach and found this... (pointing to a document) The oldest document in our records - a deed of Sasine transferring title from James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser to James Jacob Fraser Murray.

Claire looks at the document with the shock of recognition and a thrill of memory. The clerk does not notice.

CLERK (continued)
The property was transferred in 1745, as a witness... Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser and Claire Beauchamp... (squinting) It's a bit stained, but I think his last name is Fraser too.

Claire reacts by looking at the SIGNATURES, remembering a MEMORY triggered by the stain.

CLEAR
Yes. I believe that was the case.
Claire picks up the old parchment, gently touches the signatures for a moment before regaining her voice.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
What's next?

CLERC
Divers Murray, it seems. The property remained in this family for many generations.

Claire smiles knowing that Jenny and her family have spent their days in Lallybroch. The clerk hands Claire an ENVELOPE.

CLERK (continued)
I have made you a copy, so it is up to you to keep it.

CLAIRE
One last thing. Is it possible to do genealogical research?

CLERC
Yes, what is it called?

CLAIRE
Roger MacKenzie. I'll give you the names of his parents...

As Claire begins to write them down on a piece of paper...

21EXT. CITY HALL - DAY - SHORTLY AFTER (1968)21

Claire walks out of the building with TWO MANILA ENVELOPES and gets into her car.

22INT. CLAIRE'S CAR - DAY - CONTINUOUS (1968)22

Before starting the car, she opens one of the envelopes.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
I just wanted to satisfy a curiosity. Ever since I heard Roger was a MacKenzie, I wondered if there was an ancestral connection to Colum or Rupert... but studying
Roger's family tree, I got a shock.

She studies the document inside - a family tree.

ON CLAIRE'S FACE -- she's stunned by what's on paper.

23WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - CLAIRE'S ROOM - NIGHT (1968)23

Claire is sitting on the bed, after taking off her shoe and rubbing her foot from her day of trekking, when Brianna enters. Claire looks up, happy to see her.

CLAIRE
So how was your date with Roger?

BRIANNA
It wasn't a "date."

CLAIRE
You must admit that he is certainly handsome and intelligent. And he has a very beautiful physique.

BRIANNA
Mom! Who said physical? Stop it.

CLEAR
And his eyes, such a deep blue.

BRIANNA
Maybe you should go out with him.
CLAIRE
Where did you go?

BRIANNA
Fort William. Do you know?

Claire reacts. The thought of his daughter at the place where she was held captive by Randall, and Jamie was nearly whipped to death. But it covers quickly.

CLEAR
Once... I didn't care.

BRIANNA
So what did you do today?

CLAIRE
Oh, I went around the village.

BRIANNA
Places you and Dad have been before?

CLAIRE
A few.

But Claire's evasive tone and lack of elaboration trigger Brianna's radar. She suddenly asks:

BRIANNA
Do you miss him?

CLAIRE Of
course.

But the superficial answer does not satisfy.

BRIANNA
Sometimes it doesn't seem like it doesn't. Or... that you have not always liked it.

Claire is shocked by the explosive statement.

CLAIRE
What a funny idea.

A beat. Then more quietly.

BRIANNA
Well, did you like it

CLEAR
(the truth) Yes.

BRIANNA
What's next? You got married and you got me and... what? What really happened between the two of you?

CLAIRE
Nothing happened, I don't know what you're talking about.

BRIANNA
Good. We can just keep pretending you don't know what I'm talking about for the next twenty years if you want to.

Claire takes a moment.

BRIANNA (continued)
I think we should stay another day - I want to spend time with Roger at college tomorrow.

Claire sees that Brianna has now backed off. The walls are in place.
Claire goes to her MEDICAL BAG and OPENS it.

CLAIRE
I wouldn't mind staying. Dr. Abernathy asked me to take medication for his research... I have a list here somewhere...

Brianna COMES OUT. Claire starts pulling out bottles and bottles from her bag as she searches for the list...

24INT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S ROOM - JOUR (1746)24

TITLE CARD: 7:30 a.m.

Claire pulls out vials from her medical box while Jamie closes the door behind them. She rushed him here so they could talk privately. Out of breath from running, a proposal for Charles arises.

CLEAR
This battle, this war – everything that is about to happen – it all depends on Charles.

JAMIE
Oui.

CLAIRE
If he were to die... Right now... Now... There would be no battle. And this bloody rebellion would die with him.

JAMIE

Christ!

Claire finds the bottles she was looking for in the box.

CLAIRE
I have them. Yellow jasmine. It's toxic. The same mixture Colum took last night. (out of Jamie's gaze) He asked me. begged me. He knew his time was near.

JAMIE
(shaking) He committed suicide? It is a mortal sin.

CLAIRE
He wanted a quick and peaceful death and I gave it to him.

Jamie absorbs this, then nods. He understands.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
Charles is ill, suffering from scurvy for weeks. I took care of him before Falkirk, made him tea with rose hips. I can do it again.

JAMIE
In a tea?

CLEAR
The way it works... It's like drifting into a deep sleep.

JAMIE
He'll never know.

CLAIRE
No one would ever know.

OFF JAMIE and CLAIRE -- looking at each other, anguish in their faces, as they ponder the plan --

SMASH CUT to:

25EXT. INVERNESS COLLEGE - JOUR (1968)25

The next morning. Roger and Brianna walk along a PATH. As they approach the building of history...

ROGER
I meet the curator on the second floor. I shouldn't be long, so we can go home and start the big digging of the Reverend's diaries.

BRIANNA
Awesome. I will explore.

26INT. INVERNESS COLLEGE - HISTORY BUILDING - DAY (1968)26

Roger and Brianna enter the lobby. As Roger separates, Brianna's attention is drawn to a small gathering taking place in the MAIN ASSEMBLY AREA. She hears the impassioned speech of a woman at the front.

GILLIAN (O.C.)
America, India, Ireland – all have proven that it is possible. This independence is possible.

27INTERNATIONAL HISTORY BUILDING - MAIN ASSEMBLY AREA - DAY (1968)27

A GROUP of students listens to GILLIAN EDGARS. A supple woman with flowing red hair, Gillian is only seen from behind.

GILLIAN
That an idea can become reality, that a few can become many and speak out against a tyrannical government. We cannot deny that the needs of English will always come before Scottish needs. And we can no longer let their vision dictate ours.

Brianna stands against the back wall to listen more. A handful of students and a few professors are very attentive.

GILLIAN (continued)
The Act of Union of 1707 was a betrayal. When Scotland was united with England, under one crown, with one parliament, it was the beginning of the end for us. We have lost more than our independence, we have lost our spirit. The Westminster Government, the bankers in The City, the newspapers in Fleet Street have stolen our money, our votes, our future.

As she speaks, SHOT around the back of GILLIAN to reveal - Gillian is actually GEILLIS DUNCAN. A younger version of Geillis, but undoubtedly her.

Where are the leaders of old who knew how to care for their people – the kings who became legendary – Arthur of Wales, Richard the Lionheart and Prince Charles Edward Stuart, our Bonnie Prince? We've all heard of the Battle of Culloden, but imagine how different things would be now if we had won. Where is our Bonnie Prince Charlie today? (a call to arms) I'm Bonnie Prince Charlie! You're Bonnie Prince Charlie! Scotland must take its destiny into its own hands!

CHEERS AND APPLAUSE from the crowd. At the end of the speech, Gillian is assaulted by her supporters.

TIME CUT:

Moments later, Gillian answers questions, shakes hands and distributes PAMPHLETS to the crowd. Brianna is in the crowd and catches his attention. As Brianna approaches Gillian, a few ardent supporters finish praising the impassioned speech.
THEN--

BRIANNA
I liked your speech. (then) But wasn't it the Scottish King James VI who united the Crowns? And Queen Anne, his Scottish granddaughter who signed the Acts of Union?

Gillian immediately hears the criticism, but handles the question smoothly - she has already answered this one.

GILLIAN
Yes, but Anne was raised Anglican, already under the influence of Westminster. Prince Charles and his father, King James, wanted to undo all that.

BRIANNA
It looks like they just exchanged one king for another.

GILLIAN
Charles was Catholic and Scottish. Unlike the German Geordie and the Hanoverians, his loyalty was to us.

BRIANNA
Maybe. Monarchs are monarchs. It doesn't look much like power for the people.

Gillian is a little taken by this girl who challenges her while others flatter her like a rock star.

GILLIAN
You are American. Are you a student here?

BRIANNA(
introduces herself)
Brianna Randall. I only visit. I am a history student from Boston.

GILLIAN
(shaking his hand)
Gillian Edgars. Boston? So you know a little bit about how to overthrow a distant regime.

BRIANNA
Yes, but America is also run by financial interests – Washington, Wall Street...

GILLIAN
Democracy in Action.

BRIANNA
An imperfect system, but I don't think monarchy is the answer.

GILLIAN
So why are you here?

BRIANNA
I am a history student. I like to watch history unfold.

Gillian smiled, reluctantly finding respect for the impetuous American student.

ROGER (O.C.)
There you are.

Roger appears. Gillian gives Brianna a PAMPHLET with her photo on it and the logo of her organisation - the WHITE ROSES OF SCOTLAND.

GILLIAN
There's another gathering later at The Finch, a pub near campus... (adds) Where we will write history.

Brianna smiles, without obligation, and leaves with Roger. SHOT OF GILLIAN as she watches Brianna walk away.

GREENHOUSE PLAN ON PRINCE CHARLES EDWARD STUART 28 28

Her dapper dress and smiling expression. It is abnormally motionless. That's because – it's not Charles in the flesh, but a LIFE-SIZE WAX FIGURE of Prince Bonnie.
CULLODEN VISITOR CENTRE AND INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM - DAY (1968)

In a building right next to the infamous battlefield, a group of TOURISTS admire the wax resemblance of the leader of the Jacobite rebellion.

TOURIST
Big boy, isn't it?

CLAIRE (O.C.)
He wasn't that big in real life.
SHOT OF CLAIRE walking next to them, looking at Charlie. The tourist gives him a questioning look. Claire continues:

CLAIRE (cont'd)
He could have been great. He had the name, the cause and the support of men willing to give their lives for him. We took a fool and turned him into a hero.

Claire shakes her head, walks away. It is found near an
exhibition entitled: WEAPONS AND ARTIFACTS FOUND ON THE BATTLEFIELD. She takes a look at the variety of swords, muskets, targes and other historical artifacts. Then hears a husband and wife:

WOMAN(
curious) And what is this thing inside?

HUSBAND
Hmm... Unsure. Looks like a... Dragonfly perhaps?

Claire looks and sees the DRAGONFLY IN AMBER given to her by Hugh Munro. Claire looks at him, filled with emotion.

FADE TO BLACK:

29WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - STORAGE ROOM - DAY (1968)29

POV from inside the storage room darkens as the door opens, letting light in through the dust clouds. Brianna waves a hand in front of her face as she coughs.

BRIANNA
How long has anyone been in this room?

ROGER
Years, I guess.

He shines a flashlight, lighting stacks of cardboard cardboard, crates, steamboat trunks. Find a dangling cord, the pull. The room is suddenly illuminated by the glare of an oversized bulb. Bree rummages, finds a stack of leather-bound newspapers.

BRIANNA
Is it his diaries?

ROGER
Yes. If there is anything here about what happened in 1948, we should be able to find it.

She moves the box, a small gray hairy creature escapes.

BRIANNA
What was that?! It was huge.

ROGER
Probably a rat. (hands him the flashlight) Make this shine in all dark places, at least you won't be taken by surprise.

BRIANNA
Thank you very much.

ROGER
Well, keep it up then. Or did you want me to do a rat satire on the spot?

BRIANNA
(raising her eyebrows) A rat satire?

ROGER
An old Scottish custom; If you had rats in your house, you could make them leave by singing to them – telling rats how badly they ate where they were, and how good it was elsewhere.

BRIANNA
You're kidding, aren't you?

ROGER
(singing) You rats are too many, if you want to dine in abundance, you must leave, you must leave. Go fill your bellies, Dinna stays and gnaws my wellies--Come on, you rats, go!
BRIANNA
Did you invent that?

ROGER
Of course. Any good rat satire should always be original.

BRIANNA
After this performance, there shouldn't be a rat miles away from this place.

They both laugh. Brianna looks at him, warming up a little. But then she spots something, breaking the moment.

BRIANNA (suite)
Randall.

Roger looks at a cardboard labeled with his last name. They will open it. It contains a strange assortment of items. PAPERS, LETTERS, PHOTOGRAPHS, ARMY CALL LISTS.

ROGER
Now there is a legacy for you.

He draws a coat of arms on the head of a sheet.

ROGER (continued)
A letter of commission in the army, signed by His Royal Majesty, King George II. Dated 1735.

BRIANNA,
"Jonathan Wolverton Randall." I remember Dad talking about him. It is one of our ancestors.

ROGER
Looks like he was one of the few British soldiers killed in the Battle of Culloden. The Highlanders lost almost 2000 and the British only 50. (then) Here is a letter from your father...

BRIANNA
(Reading it) The Reverend was researching the captain, but my father told him to abandon the project. "He's not the man I thought."

ROGER
Strange. Let's bring these boxes inside the library. Unless you want to wait and see if my satire worked.

As they begin to carry the boxes inside...

30INT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S ROOM - JOUR (1746)30

TITLE CARD: 8:15 a.m.

Back with Jamie and Claire as they continue to discuss a plan to poison Prince Charles...

JAMIE
Make no mistake, this is cold-blooded murder that we would be committing.

CLAIRE
To stop a massacre. Take a life - to save thousands.

Just then, ROSS rushes into the SIDE DOOR.

ROSS
Jamie! Lord George asks for your presence near the East! You have to come right away. They call men to form lines!

JAMIE
Oui.

Ross leaves. Jamie turns back to Claire, time is running out.

JAMIE (continued)
We need to act quickly.

CLAIRE
I can mix the yellow jasmine into a tea now, bring it to him.

JAMIE
J’ai passé un an à appeler cet homme mon ami.

OFF JAMIE ET
CLAIRE alors qu’ils sont frappés de plein fouet par sa colère ---

SMASH CUT À:

31EXT. CULLODEN MOOR - JOUR (1968)31

WE FOLLOW CLAIRE as she walks through the grassy field, past the large granite grave stones that mark the mass graves. CLAN MACGILLIVRAY. CLAN MACINTOSH. CLAN CAMERON. MIXED CLANS.

Claire HEARS FRANK'S VOICE in her head, telling him about Culloden [Episode 105].

CLAIRE (V.O.)
I came here with Frank in 1945 and walked among those same tombstones. But this time, I knew the men whose bones lay beneath them.

She stops in front of the last: CLAN FRASER. A Scottish woman approaches. Rest HEATHER on the grave.

WOMAN
Are you a Fraser?

CLAIRE
Yes... I am. .

WOMAN
We must never forget them. They made our children proud.

Claire nods. The woman walks away, Claire is alone on the grave. She stands there for a beat, then talks to "Jamie."

CLAIRE
I swore I'd never set foot in this horrible place, but here I am. And I know you're here... your bones at least. But I'm not going to cry. You wouldn't want that. By the way, I came with good news. You have a beautiful daughter... Brianna. Named after your father, as I promised. (then) I was so angry with you, for so long. You made me live a life I didn't care to live. But you were right, damn it. Brianna was safe, loved, and well-mannered. Frank always treated her like his daughter. It's just her and me now. But sometimes when she turns around and I see her red hair or when I catch her smiling in her sleep, it takes my breath away – because I see you. She's so beautiful, Jamie... I wish you could meet her. She's a Fraser, okay. Stubborn, fearless...

As Claire starts talking to Jamie about her daughter...

CLAIRE (cont'd)
She was born at 7:15 a.m. on a rainy Boston morning...

TIME CUT:

32EXT. CULLODEN MOOR - DAY - HOURS LATER (1968)32

Claire finished.

CLAIRE
That's all, everything I remember. And no tears. You probably didn't think I could do it, did you? (then, a long beat) Do you remember that day in Craigh na Dun? We have said a lot. But there is one thing I did not say. I couldn't. And I haven't done it in twenty years. But I'm here and it's time. Thus...

(then)
Goodbye, Jamie Fraser, my love... Be quiet, soldier.
Claire turns around and walks away, before the dam breaks.

3OMIS3

34WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - REVEREND LIBRARY - DAY (1968)34

Roger and Brianna sit on the floor, surrounded by boxes, as they sort and read newspapers labeled 1948. Roger reads something. His eyes are flashing - he looks alarmed.

BRIANNA
Do you find something?

ROGER
No... ah... Nothing yet... We should stop for lunch. There are many remnants of the vigil...

He closes the paper, but Brianna notices OLD YELLOWED NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS coming out of the paper.

BRIANNA
What is it...?

ROGER
Hmm? Oh. Nothing. Just a few old newspaper clippings.

BRIANNA
Really? See--

Brianna grabs the newspaper and pulls out the newspaper clippings. It reads one of the TITLES:

BRIANNA (continued)
"Kidnapped by the Fairies?"

She holds a clipping from the same newspaper with the PHOTO of Claire seen in episode 201. Other clippings describe Claire's initial disappearance and search, and there is a copy of one of the "LOUSE" flyers [Episode 108].

BRIANNA (continued) (reading)
"Claire Randall, wife of the famous historian Frank Randall... holidays in Inverness... car found... gone without a trace... The police thought she might have been murdered...

Brianna looks up, shocked.

ROGER
Obviously not. It has arrived.

BRIANNA
Three years later. (continues reading) "Mysteriously found wandering... Dressed in rags, disoriented, incoherent... »

ROGER
I think we found your "incident".

BRIANNA
What about the review? What did the Reverend say about all this?

ROGER
Are you sure you want to do it? You may not like what you find.

BRIANNA
I want the truth. No matter what.

Roger hands her the newspaper and Brianna starts reading.

TIME CUT:

A36EXT. WAKEFIELD HOUSE - DAY (1968)A36

Establish Claire's car parked in the driveway.

36WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - SALON - DAY (1968)36

CLOSE-UP ON THE BROCHURE: THE WHITE ROSES OF SCOTLAND placed on the table.

Claire walks past the flyer as she prepares a cup of tea. She seems calmer and at peace since visiting Jamie's grave, which gave her a sense of fullness. Claire puts her tea right next to the flyer. Geillis Duncan's face looks at her, but she doesn't see him.

Brianna enters, coming from above. She has been simmering for hours and she has a sheaf of PAPERS in her hand.

CLAIRE
Here you are. Do you want tea?

BRIANNA
What I'd like to know is exactly what you've been doing in the last two days.

CLEAR
As I told you, I was...

BRIANNA
Walking around the city. Herb picking. That's all?

CLAIRE
Bree? What is going on?

BRIANNA
Did you see it?

CLEAR
WHO?

BRIANNA
My father. Have you seen my father?

Claire's stomach turns over - how could she know that? She tries to gather, fights for an indignant tone.

CLAIRE
What -- what kind of question on earth is this to ask?

BRIANNA
Not dad - he's dead, I know. I'm talking about my father. The man you had an affair with. The man you've been with for three years.

She throws a pile of PAPERS at her feet – the newspaper clippings, the missing poster – the scattered evidence of a lie that has been held for two decades. Claire closes her eyes, tries to stabilize herself. The moment she has always dreaded is here and rushes like a locomotive that runs at full speed.

CLAIRE
is... complicated, Bree...

BRIANNA
It's pretty simple, actually. The newspapers say that your "miraculous return" took place in April 1948. Well, I was born in November '48. Do the math and it turns out you were three months pregnant when the "fairies" brought you back to Daddy.

Be quiet. Roger is entering right now with PAPERS in his hand.

ROGER
Bree! I found something else in the Reverend's correspondence. I don't know what that means, but...

He suddenly realizes that his timing couldn't be worse.

ROGER (continued)
Oh. Sorry. I should let you...

BRIANNA
Stay! This is your home and you didn't lie to anyone.

CLAIRE
I really think we should talk alone.

BRIANNA
He's my friend and he stays.

Claire's head spins, but she makes a decision.

CLEAR
OKAY. We should all sit down.

They do, including Roger. Claire takes a deep breath:

CLAIRE (cont'd)
There was... another man. And... I loved him very much. And... Yes, he was... your real father.

Brianna looks like she has been slapped, but she refuses to collapse.

BRIANNA
You lied to me. All my life...

CLAIRE
Frank didn't want you to know.

BRIANNA
You dare to make him wear this...

CLAIRE
He wanted to raise you as his child and I accepted. That's why we moved to America, to leave it all behind.

BRIANNA
Until you find an excuse to visit Scotland... Is that really why we are here? So I could have some kind of... Surprise presentation to my real father?

CLEAR
No. It's not possible anyway...

BRIANNA
Because he has no interest in meeting his daughter?

CLAIRE
Because he died.

Beat.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
I promised Frank I wouldn't tell you about him, so for twenty years I haven't even said his name out loud. But now you know. So I'll tell you about him... About your father... Jamie Fraser.

BRIANNA
I don't want to know anything about him. Not a single thing.

She gets up and starts leaving, but Roger stops her.

ROGER
Bree-- (she stops) You told me you just wanted the truth, no matter what. Well, that's it.

Brianna looks him in the eye for a long time - and Claire notices the trust and bond that has already formed between them. Brianna sits down and looks her mother straight in the eye.

BRIANNA
Let's hear her.

CLAIRE
Jamie loved you - even though he never met you, he loved you with all his heart. And he would have raised you... if it weren't for the Battle of Culloden.

BRIANNA
Culloden...? What does that have to do with that?

CLEAR
Everything.

37INT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S ROOM - JOUR (1746)37

The title card reads as follows: 8:20 a.m.

Back with Jamie, Claire and Dougal, having heard their plan to kill Charles.

JAMIE
Dougal. That's not what you think, man.

DOUGAL
right? Not what I think? The woman exhorts you to commit filthy murder, to murder your prince!

CLAIRE
Dougal, please listen...

DOUGAL
(to Claire) You. I knew you were a traitor, the first time I laid eyes on you!

Dougal's eyes raked Claire, burning with something between horror and fury. Then starts towards her -- Jamie stands between them --

JAMIE
Watch now.

Chief MacKenzie stops, stares at his nephew and instead of exploding... sags, a ridge of pain and sorrow.

DOUGAL
You place your trust in someone, you give in to him with heart and soul. Then to hear him planning the murder of our beloved prince... I'd rather be pulled and quartered.

Somewhere deep in his gut, Dougal resigns, makes a decision.

DOUGAL (continued)
You betray us all... what's worse, Jamie, you're betraying Scotland itself. (turning to Claire) How about you. You are nothing but a lying slut, who would take a man by the cock and lead him to his doom, with claws driven deep into his balls.

JAMIE
That's my wife! You won't speak ill of her, even in your anger.

DOUGAL
What you have done to me, we are beyond anger.

Dougal puts his hand on his sword. It doesn't stop.

JAMIE
You're tired, Dougal. Hungry and cold. Go now, and I'll ...

But Dougal has pulled out his sword and he passes Jamie for Claire, who screams and dodges. Dougal grabs her hair and she scratches her face. He raises his sword - ready to plunge it into her - when Jamie drops it from his hand. Jamie's fist hits Dougal hard in the ribs. Dougal lets go of Claire, then whirls around to face Jamie, pulling his knife now. Jamie is unarmed. But he faces Dougal, his eyes fixed on the tip of Dougal's blade.

JAMIE (continued)
Drop it, Dougal.

But Dougal hits upwards, a hard blow. Jamie dodges, agility of youth on his side, but Dougal holds the knife. Dougal rushes Jamie, dirt sliding down Jamie's side, tearing his shirt, marking a dark line in his flesh. Jamie whistles in pain and grabs Dougal's wrist.

CLAIRE
(screaming) Stop! Please! Don't do that!

Claire grabs a crate and smashes it on Dougal's back. JAMIE AND DOUGAL - locked up now like lovers. Jamie gains the upper hand and is on top of Dougal, but Dougal still holds the blade, standing up. There is no Dougal stop. He will fight to the death. Jamie fights him as best he can. But it's steel versus flesh. The dirt rises, two hands struggle for it. Dougal clenched it in his fist and the tip rose to Jamie's heart - and just before the sharp iron meets the tartan - Jamie, using all his strength, twists the blade, now pointing it towards Dougal's heart. Jamie uses his leverage and weight to slowly push the blade into his uncle's chest. Claire takes a step forward, looks at Jamie, then Dougal. There is a terrible noise of Chief MacKenzie, a sound of SHOCK and MUFFLED BREATH. Jamie pulls him up. Dougal's head rests on Jamie's lap, Jamie's arms wrapped around his adoptive father.

JAMIE

I'm sorry, uncle. (then, in Gaelic) Please forgive me.
Claire kneels beside them, Dougal's body becomes limp as the last breath of life leaves him. Jamie and Claire close their eyes.

SMASH CUT to:

38WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - SALON - DAY (1968)38

Claire has just finished telling her story. Brianna looks at her, having absorbed everything. Roger's calm. Claire holds her breath, waiting for the reaction. Finally--

BRIANNA
is... narcotic.

Brianna reveals nothing of her feelings, responding in a flat and emotionless tone. Given the circumstances, Claire is relieved that her daughter is taking it so well.

CLAIRE
I know it must be quite a shock.

BRIANNA
I... I don't know what to say.

CLAIRE
You have nothing to say.
That's a lot to assimilate.

Brianna shakes her head, looks at Roger, then her mother.

BRIANNA
So how long have you been preparing this story?

CLAIRE
No... I realize it must sound crazy, but...

BRIANNA
Do you really think I'd swallow that... tale? Do you think I'm still five years old?

CLAIRE
This is not a fairy tale.

BRIANNA
The man I grew up with, who loved me for twenty years, is not my father. My "real" father is a six-foot-three-inch red-haired guy in an eighteenth-century kilt. What is wrong with you?

Claire takes her daughter by the shoulders.

CLAIRE
Listen to me, Bree. Frank was your father in every way that matters, except one: He didn't make you. Jamie and I did. You look like him. Your hair, your mannerisms... And he would have loved you and raised you if it hadn't been...

BRIANNA
The Battle of Culloden?! Oh my God, stop!

CLAIRE
That's right! Here. Look.

Claire shows Brianna a copy of Sasine's Act.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
My signature is on Lallybroch's deed. Claire Beauchamp Fraser. My maiden name and my handwriting.

Brianna doesn't even look at him.

BRIANNA
Admit it! Admit you're not a perfect person. Admit the fact that you fucked someone else while you were married to Dad, just like a million other bored housewives!

CLAIRE(
Shouting) I wasn't bored! And what Jamie and I had was much more than that. He was the love of my life!
There is a beat, and then finally tears flow to Brianna's eyes.

BRIANNA
(heartbroken) Why are you doing this?

CLAIRE
(softening) Oh, Bree... I do this because... Because it's the truth.

Brianna looks at Claire, colder now.

BRIANNA
Only two people know what truth really is. And one of them died. Too bad it's not you.

A dagger in Claire's heart. Brianna turns around and walks out.

39INT. THE FINCH - JOUR (1968)39

Roger and Brianna are sitting at the bar. She rejects the PAPERS Roger had brought earlier, when he interrupted her with Claire talking.

BRIANNA
It doesn't mean anything.

ROGER
I don't know what that means, to be honest. But the reverend obviously thought it meant something.

The bartender pours a few glasses.

BRIANNA
She's crazy. That's all that matters.

ROGER
She doesn't seem crazy to me.

BRIANNA
So you weren't listening.

Brianna throws the drink away, chokes a little. She is not used to drinking whisky directly.

ROGER
Don't pick on me, but Sasine's act sounded authentic.

BRIANNA
So a seventeen-year-old woman had the same name as her. Or she read about someone and fantasizes that it was her own life.

ROGER
or... What if there was something in his story?

BRIANNA
Keep it up and I could just pick on you after all.

ROGER
You told me that you could never get close to your mother, that she lived in another world. Maybe she's trying to show you this world.

BRIANNA
So you think she's traveled 200 years into the past? Through a stone?

ROGER
It doesn't matter if I believe in it. She believes in it.

BRIANNA
Which brings us back to madness.

ROGER
Do you remember all those boxes in the storage room? They are not all my father's. There is one -- somewhere buried in the dust -- that belongs to me. From my biological parents. And I never opened it. Maybe I want to hold on to the image I have of them and not have any surprises. Maybe I'm afraid of what I'm going to learn about myself.

BRIANNA
It's easier to dig into the story when it's not yours.

ROGER
I'm just saying maybe we should keep an open mind.

BRIANNA
How can we keep an open mind about this?

Brianna throws away her drink.

40WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - SALON - DAY (1968)40

Claire paced around, frustrated. Worried that she has alienated her daughter for good. Something catches Claire's attention among a stack of papers on the desk – a familiar face –

SLOWED MOTION as Claire focuses on the WHITE ROSES OF SCOTLAND PAMPHLET that Brianna brought back from the gathering - THE FACE OF GEILLIS DUNCAN!
While a stunned Claire picks up the paper.

CLAIRE (V.O.)
There were ghosts around me everywhere since I arrived. Red hair, striking blue eyes. The face was unmistakable. Geillis Duncan. I remembered the date she told me at the trial... the year she crossed the stones. 1968.It was not a ghost. Geillis was there – a younger version of her – but she was there.

Claire walks to the office, grabs a phone book, starts flipping through it.

41INT. JAMIE & CLAIRE’S ROOM - JOUR (1746)41

TITLE CARD: 9:00 AM

BACK WITH JAMIE AND CLAIRE on Dougal's body... When a voice startles them to return to reality...

RUPERT (O.C.)
Grand Christ !

Jamie and Claire look up to discover that RUPERT has just arrived in time to see the horrific picture. Jamie, bloodied and out of breath, Dougal's head pounded Jamie's thigh, his lifeless eyes staring at the space. Rupert reacts with horror to the lifeless body of his great leader. For once in his life, Rupert is stunned. He looks at Jamie with total bewilderment.

JAMIE
Rupert...

But there is nothing to say. Finally, Rupert shakes his head.

RUPERT
I would have ripped out my only good eye, if it had prevented me from seeing that. But I saw it.
JAMIE
Yes, you saw it.

And with that, a whole conversation passes between them. Jamie is his friend - but Rupert can't let his boss's murder be forgiven.

JAMIE (continued)
I ask you for a favor... Two hours. There are some things I need to do to... You understand?

Rupert looks at Claire - he understands.

RUPERT
And then?

JAMIE
I will come back to answer for what I did. I give you my word. Two hours. Will you grant me that, before you speak?

RUPERT
For the memory of the... the friendship I once had for you and now you have murdered as surely as you did for my leader... Yes, I will give you two hours, and then I will damn your soul in the fiery pit.

Jamie gets up, grabs Claire and they walk out, leaving Rupert standing on the body of his one and only laird...

SMASH CUT to:

42EXT. GILLIAN EDGARS' HOUSE - DAY (1968)42

Foundation. Claire's car stops and she gets out, noticing the white CITROËN already parked there.

43EXT. GILLIAN EDGARS' HOUSE - DAY (1968)43

Claire knocks on a door. She opens up and comes face to face with GREG EDGARS, Gillian's husband. Handsome and rough around the edges, he holds a glass of whiskey and looks like he's waking up.

CLAIRE
I am looking for a Miss Gillian Edgars. Is it his residence?

GREG EDGARS
Yes. What do you want from him?

CLAIRE
I'm an old friend of Gillian's. Claire Randall. You must be...?

GREG EDGARS
Son mari.

44INT. GILLIAN EDGARS' HOUSE - DAY - QUELQUES INSTANTS LATER (1968)44

The house is stylish, well it would be if it weren't for a complete disaster zone. It stinks of stale cigarettes and takeaways. Greg pours a glass to Claire. Put the glass on the table in front of her.

GREG EDGARS
Slàinte...

Claire examines a FRAMED PHOTO on Greg and Gillian's coat in happier days. A WEDDING PHOTO.

CLAIRE
I'm not going to stay long in the area, do you know where it might be? I would really like to say hello.

GREG EDGARS
It will probably be with the Roses, but I haven't kept up.

CLAIRE
Les Roses? White roses from Scotland?

GREG EDGARS
Bloodthirsty nationalists. That's where we met.

Greg has certainly had more than a few, and he's in drunk mode as he finds his way unsteady to a chair.

GREG EDGARS (continued)
Fun at first, isn't it? Throw away the bloody English, join the Common Market by ourselves... Beer at the pub, cuddling in the back of the van Comin' Home from gatherings. The woman is a devil in her box. That was before it became pot.

CLAIRE
Pot?

GREG EDGARS
Yes. Many teachers dressed in kilts with swords. Very good if you like it, of course. But Gilly always went too far. Again and again about Bonnie Prince, and wouldn't it be a good thing if he had won the '45? Guys in the kitchen until all hours, drinking beer and arguing why he hadn't. In Gaelic too. Now she spends all her time at the Institute, day and night, spending all my money in class... Folklore, they call it. She filled a million notebooks with her "discoveries".

His eyes begin to sag as he nods towards the corner where there is a small wooden desk, littered with papers.
GREG EDGARS (continued)
Why not learn how to type? Find a job, if she's bored, that's what I told her. So she left. It's been weeks now. (re: whisky) Another one?

CLAIRE
Thank you, no. So you're saying she's been gone for weeks?

She watches him down his third drink.

GREG EDGARS That's
what I said. If you see Gilly, tell her to go home, huh? Tell him... I love him.

CLAIRE Of
course.

Greg closes his eyes, alcohol rocking him into sleep. Claire looks at him all at once, feels really sorry for the man. Claire looks at the office. She slips in and quietly rummages through the papers on top, then the drawers. Search MULTIPLE NOTEBOOKS. She slips them into her coat and leaves.

GILLIAN (PRÉ-TOUR)
Brianna...?

45INT. THE FINCH - NUIT (1968)45

Brianna and Roger are still struggling with Claire's revelations when Gillian Edgars stops by their table.

BRIANNA
Gillian, bonjour.

GILLIAN
You missed a big gathering earlier.

BRIANNA
I'm sorry we missed it. Roger and I are just... with a whisky.

ROGER
(explains) It was a bit of a difficult day.

Gillian looks at Brianna with a raised brow of curiosity.

BRIANNA
My mom is crazy.

GILLIAN
(laughs) A sentiment shared by girls around the world.

Brianna looks at Gillian, she can't help but love her.

BRIANNA
Maybe I'll see you at the next gathering.

GILLIAN
I'm afraid to leave tonight to... further the cause. But don't stop asking the tough questions. This is how the world changes.

Gillian smiled. A cryptic message, but Brianna feels that she will never see Gillian again.

46CULLODEN INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - VESTIBULE - DAY (17)46

TITLE CARD: 9:30 AM

Jamie and Claire rush to find Murtagh in chaos. FERGUS with him. Murtagh, with a glance at Jamie's face, knows something is wrong. Jamie leans over to his godfather and says without explanation.

JAMIE
I killed Dougal MacKenzie.

Murtagh's face goes blank for a split second, then returns to normal.

MURTAGH
I'm not surprised, only that it took you so long. What to do then?
The tide of history sweeps them over the waterfall and nothing can stop it. Jamie walks out the front door and comes back a beat later with a ROLLED PAPER, then spreads it over something nearby.

CLAIRE
What is it?

JAMIE
An act of Sasine. He passed the title to Lallybroch to James Jacob Fraser Murray...

MURTAGH
Do you give the place to your nephew?

JAMIE
Yes. Then it will prevent the Crown from taking it. This protected Lallybroch, kept the estate in the family and out of the hands of the British who would seize and
plunder it. Held in trust by Jenny and Ian until Wee Jamie is old enough.

CLAIRE
It's dated last year.

JAMIE
Yes. Before the rebellion, before I was a traitor. I need the signatures of two witnesses.

MURTAGH
(to Fergus) Go get some ink and a pen, my boy. And fast!

Fergus runs away - Murtagh glances around to make sure no one is listening.

MURTAGH (continued)
Do you want me to bring it to Jenny?

JAMIE
Fergus will.

Fergus returns with a small inkwell and a tattered feather.

FERGUS
me, Milord?

As Murtagh SIGNS the act...

JAMIE(
to Fergus) Yes.You have to join Lallybroch quickly. You have to leave now. This must reach Mrs Murray - without fail. It's worth more than my life – or my own.

FERGUS
I don't want to leave you, Milord! I will not!

JAMIE
You must. Not only for the act, but... No matter what happens here today, it is important for someone to remember. Do you understand, yes?

As Claire signs her name, she is defeated, realizing that this may be the last time they see young Fergus. A TEAR falls on the act as she signs it, making a watery stain.

FERGUS
I will not let you down, Milord!

Jamie puts a hand on Fergus' head.

JAMIE
I know you won't, and I'm grateful for that. Don't stop for anything except to sleep, and when you do, hide well. You're a soldier now. (then) My son, I love you, like a son.

Defeated, Fergus kisses Jamie's hand. Then Claire takes Fergus' face in her hands. Kiss his cheeks.

CLAIRE
Like our own son.

Jamie hands the act over to Fergus. Fergus stands taller before the enormity of the responsibility he knows he has been entrusted with. Jamie and Claire watch Fergus leave...

SMASH CUT to:

47WAKEFIELD INT. HOUSE - REVEREND'S LIBRARY - NIGHT (1968)47

Claire takes a GLASS OF WHISKY as she pours into Gillian's notebooks. She looks back on the moment she first laid eyes on Geillis Duncan in the orchard [Episode 102].

CLAIRE (V.O.)
For hours, I read Geillis' notebooks, I tried to make sense of the convoluted pages... They contained formulas on the art and science of time travel. Unlike me, Geillis had studied and prepared his trip. I was amazed to learn that she believed in having to have a human sacrifice to move through the stones... and precious stones to protect and guide you...

Another FLASHBACK - Cranesmuir's church as Geillis is swept away by the angry mob - the last time Claire laid eyes on Geillis Duncan [Episode 111].

CLAIRE (V.O.)
From what I could tell, Geillis had planned to go through Craigh na Dun - and soon. Unfortunately, I knew how this trip would end - with Geillis burned at the stake at Cranesmuir. I had to try to stop him...

Claire finally closes the notebook, using Gillian's PAMPHLET as her bookmark.

48EXT. HIGHLANDER CAMP - DAY (1746)48

TITLE CARD: 10:00 AM

With Fergus gone, Jamie now turns to Murtagh, pulling him aside and hastily confiding in his godfather.

JAMIE
Brings together the Frasers of Lallybroch. Then get them out of here. There will be a jumble on the moor, troops and horses moving back and forth. No one will stop you, with the British in sight and the fight about to begin. Tell them that the order comes from me - they will follow without questions - God helps them, that's what brought them here. Then lead them out of the moor, and away from the battle. Put them on the road to Lallybroch and the house.

MURTAGH
Are you sure?

JAMIE
This battle is lost. As fair as it is, it has been doomed from the beginning. We did what we could. But it's over. I will not let my loved ones die for nothing.

MURTAGH
And what are you going to do?

JAMIE
I'm going to take Claire to safety.

Murtagh glances towards the distant hills and then a brief reconnaissance passes between them.

JAMIE (continued)
Then I'll go back to Culloden, and I'll fight until it's done.

The always loyal Murtagh looks at his godson, shakes his head:

MURTAGH
I have always done as you asked of me, and I will guide your men to safety and put them on the way home. But know this: When you come back,
I will wait here to fight alongside you.

JAMIE
I won't let you die for nothing.

MURTAGH
It won't be... I will die with you.

Jamie looks at Murtagh and sees that he can't change his mind. He nods. The deal is done.

SMASH CUT TO:

49WAKEFIELD INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - CLAIRE'S ROOM - NIGHT (1968)49

A calmer and calmer Brianna faces Claire as they sit across from each other.

BRIANNA
I don't want to argue. Let's just agree that I have a father... who is not a dad. (then) I'm not going to discuss your whole illusion of time travel. But I want to know more about it... Jamie Fraser. Tell me about him.

CLEAR
OKAY.

Claire takes a deep breath.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
He was tall and had red hair like yours. His father's name was Brian, that's where your name comes from. He spoke French and loved to play chess. He had a sister named Jenny, your aunt...

Claire stops when it is impossible to do so.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
It would take a long time to tell you everything about him. But I will, I promise. Just as I did today, when I went to his grave in Culloden Moor to tell him about you...
BRIANNA
This is the part where you lose me.

Brianna starts to get up, but Claire brings her back with the passion she obviously feels.

CLAIRE
I didn't intend to fall in love, in fact, I fought against it. But I couldn't deny how I felt about him. I couldn't. I tried but... he... It was the most powerful thing I have ever felt in my life.

OFF Brianna as she takes Claire's words, as Roger suggested, keeping an open mind. She sits down again.

50WAKEFIELD INT. HOUSE - REVEREND'S LIBRARY - LATER (1968)50

Claire goes downstairs and finds Roger in the library drinking a whiskey. Once again, she joins him for a drink.

ROGER
How is she?

CLAIRE
We are at least talking.

ROGER
A fair improvement over shouting.

Claire sits down near where she left Gillian's notebook. She holds out the pamphlet.

CLAIRE
Do you know Gillian Edgars?

ROGER
Not really. She gave it to Brianna after...

CLAIRE
Brianna really met her?

A tired and exhausted Brianna appears in the doorway.

BRIANNA
yes. Gillian is awesome. I mean she's a little crazy about all the Scottish nationalist stuff but I liked her.

CLAIRE
Do you know where she is now?

BRIANNA
No... What for?

CLAIRE
Are you sure? I have to find it. It's important.

Brianna glances at Roger.

ROGER
We just met her at the pub, but she said she was leaving town tonight.

BRIANNA
Something about... go somewhere to "advance the cause." It didn't look like she would be back.

It hits Claire like lightning - tonight is the night Geillis will carry out his plan in Craigh na Dun:

CLAIRE
She will pass through the stones.

BRIANNA
What are you talking about?

CLAIRE
Gillian Edgars is Geillis Duncan. Excerpt from the witch trial at Cranesmuir. (brandishes a pamphlet) It's her.

Brianna turns to Roger, here we go again.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
She saved my life. And if I can get to Craigh na Dun in time, prevent him from passing through the stones, then I can save his. But... (realizing) I can't.

Roger tries to understand...

ROGER
Why not?

CLEAR...
Because of you.

ROGER
me?

CLAIRE
When I heard you were a MacKenzie... I have been looking for your family history. Your seven great-grandparents were William MacKenzie and his wife Sara, who lived in the village of Cranesmuir. They couldn't have children, so they were given one to raise as their own. This child
belonged to Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan.

ROGER
So, you say... My ancestors are actually the warlord you mentioned... And the witch?

BRIANNA
Why are you dragging Roger in this?

CLEAR
Because he has the same right as you to know who he is.

ROGER
If all this is true, then we have to stop it, right? If she goes back to being burned alive?

CLAIRE
But what happens to you if she never goes back, never meets Dougal MacKenzie, never has children? What if... You were never born?

ROGER
How can I not be born? I am here. I can't just... evaporate!

CLAIRE
I don't know how it all works.
BRIANNA
Finally, something she doesn't know about time travel. (out of sight on Roger's face)

You don't buy into that, do you?

ROGER
I don't know... But just to be on the safe side, I say we find it. At least warn her.

CLAIRE
(seizing the idea) Yes... I can warn her not to draw attention to her in the past by doing anything that smells of witchcraft.

Brianna looks back and forth between them. Then, to Roger:

BRIANNA
See what's going on here? You feed his delusions!

Brianna begins to walk away, Roger follows her and grabs her arm, speaks in a low voice.

ROGER
Maybe I am. But this could be our chance to actually face it.

BRIANNA
Facing what?

ROGER
Gillian. See what Gillian says about all this.

BRIANNA
What if Gillian was as crazy as she is? What if she really thought you could travel through solid stone to the past?

ROGER
So maybe we can all watch her snap her head into a five-ton block of granite – either way, it gives us a chance to put an end to it all.

Brianna shakes her head, doubtful. But she lets him take her hand and bring it back to Claire.

ROGER (continued)
I'm going to get my keys.

51EXT. CRAIGH NA DUN - LATE NIGHT (1968)51

Roger's car slows down as it drives up the road to the foot of Craigh na Dun. Claire waves to a WHITE CIGARETTE, parked by the side of the road.

CLAIRE
This is her husband's car.

They jump out of their car, Claire heading into the dark.

CLAIRE (cont'd)Let's
go! Quickly!

Brianna grabs Roger's elbow and follows her. After a hundred meters, WHOOSH! The night lights up in a burst of brightness. There is something burning their nostrils.

BRIANNA
What is that smell?

ROGER
It smells like gasoline. And... One more thing.

BRIANNA
My God, this is awful.
They climb faster. Claire is ahead of both. Brianna turns to Roger --

BRIANNA (continued)
Can you hear that, the buzzing?

ROGER
Yes, it's getting stronger and stronger.

Claire goes ahead, doesn't hear them say that. She arrives at the ridge just in time to see the slim figure of a woman in front of a fire, on the other side of the hill, behind the large stone. It's Gillian, dressed in a long skirt and a tight bodice – the clothes of another time.

Roger and Brianna catch up with Claire in time to see Gillian - her eyes wide, her hair flying. Gillian turns around and runs like the wind towards the big stone - which is between her and Roger, Brianna and Claire - her hand stretched out towards the rock -

ROGER (continued)
My god...

CLAIRE
(shouts) Geillis! No....!!!

Gillian runs until she is hidden behind the giant stone. As if she was running straight in. Claire, Brianna and Roger run into the stone circle, but there is no sign of Gillian. Claire leans over, exhausted by effort and emotion. Brianna and Roger look around in amazement. Gillian literally disappeared.

A beat as the shock sets in. They look to see the flames of the fire, now extinguished, to REVEAL an ugly fact: THEIR POINT OF VIEW: THE CHARRED BODY OF A MAN.

On their faces.

52EXT. HIGHLANDER CAMP - DAY (1746)52

TITLE CARD: 10:33 AM

The sound of bagpipes and war drums. Jamie leads Claire through the edges of the camp.
Like salmon swimming upstream, they go one way, while the rest of the camp congregates in the other direction. No one stops them, there is so much chaos that they are barely noticed. Jamie focuses solely on the task at hand. Claire is still in shock, until they head to a...

53EXT. STAND OF TREES - DAY (1746)53

Out of the confusion, Claire puts her foot down.

CLAIRE
Are we going?

Jamie runs his hands through his rusty locks, trying to take them lightly.

JAMIE
I'm not really discreet, am I? Jamie the red wouldn't get far, I think. But I can save you, Claire, and I will.

A few Highlanders pass by, deserting or joining the battle - hard to say. Once they're gone...

CLAIRE
We could escape! Together! Sail somewhere, anywhere!

JAMIE
The country is being monitored, the ports are closed. I'm not afraid of dying, Sassenach. A musket ball, maybe a blade. Better than the executioner's noose or the MacKenzies' wrath. I'm a dead man, anyway. I choose the battlefield.

CLAIRE
Then I'll come back with you!

JAMIE
It's hell here for you.

CLAIRE
At the witch trials at Cranesmuir, if I had gone to the stake with Geillis, would you have left me?

JAMIE
I would have gone to the stake with you, and to hell and beyond, if I had come to this. (then) But I wasn't carrying your child.

Claire freezes.

CLAIRE
How can you say that? It's far too early.

JAMIE
Sassenach, you haven't been a day late in your classes since you first took me to bed.

CLAIRE
Did you notice that? In the middle of a bloody war, did you notice that?

JAMIE
How long have you known this?

CLEAR...
A few weeks now.

Claire touches his stomach. It's true. She is pregnant. And the timing couldn't be worse.

JAMIE
This bairn is all that's left of me... never. Please, Claire...

CLAIRE
No...

JAMIE
Claire, you made me a promise. At the time you asked me to spare Randall's life... You promised me that if it came to that, you would go back through the stones, home
...
CLAIRE
You are my home!

JAMIE
And you're mine. But this house is lost. Now you and the bairn have to go to a safe place. To a man who can take care of both of you.

OFF CLAIRE -- Yes, she promised. As she makes her terrible decision, they climb for the ride. Claire takes one last look at... THE HIGHLAND ARMY. Forming in chaotic lines to cope with their loss. Then Jamie rams the horse and they leave.

54EXT. CRAIGH NA DUN - JOUR (1746)54

TITLE CARD: 1:00 AM

Jamie and Claire arrive on horseback at the foot of the hill
where they descend and leave the horse. They rush on foot
up the hill towards the STONE CIRCLE together. They stop, out of breath
. The large stone dominates them in a disturbing way.

CLAIRE
And how to explain all this... When will I come back?

JAMIE
TO Frank? I leave it to you to do that. Tell him what ru want from me. Who we are. It is likely that he will not want to hear. But if he does, tell him I'm grateful. Tell him I trust him. And say to him--I hate him to the marrow of his bones!

Jamie smiled, trying to stay strong. Claire's ears fill with the horrible buzzing, she is dizzy, and her throat closes so hard she can barely breathe. She covers her ears as if she is in pain.

CLAIRE
I hear the buzz. So strong... I'm not ready... (then) Come with me! Damn! Come through the stones!

JAMIE
I can't.

CLAIRE
You can try! You hear it, don't you? The buzz?

JAMIE
I don't hear anything.

As if to prove to him, Jamie puts his palm on the big stone. Nothing happens.

JAMIE (continued)And even if I could pass...
This is not my place. My destiny is on the moor. (hardens) But I'll find you. I promise. If I have to endure two hundred years of purgatory, two hundred years without you, then this is my punishment I deserved for my crimes. For I lied, killed, robbed, betrayed and broke trust... but when I stand
before God, I will have one thing to say, to weigh against the rest. Lord, you have given me a rare woman, and God! I loved her.

CLAIRE
And I love you.

The urgency of the moment catches up with them and they rush together one last time, MAKING LOVE against one of the trees. It's over in seconds. Jamie pushes himself away with a huge effort. And that's where they hear it -- the distant echo of the fires of the Canons. Jamie looks at the hills, knowing:

JAMIE
(gently) She began.

Claire looks to the sound, where she knows so much blood will be shed, including her husband's proud Fraser blood. Claire takes an object out of her pocket. A smooth, polished piece of AMBRE, inside a DRAGONFLY taken in flight.

CLAIRE
Hugh Munro's wedding gift. Take it with you.

She hands it to him. A talisman, a reminder of her, to wear in battle. He slips it into his sporran. She looks him in the eye, whispers their wedding vow.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
The blood of my blood...

JAMIE
... The ones of mon os.

CLAIRE
As long as we both live.

Jamie touches his belly, life inside. That part of him that will always be with her.

ANOTHER CANNON BOOM.

Jamie quickly pulls a ring from his sporran. A precious stone of one kind or another, set with gold.

JAMIE
It belonged to my father. Give it to the bairn, when it is old enough.

With tears in her eyes, Claire slips the ring on her middle finger next to Jamie's wedding ring.

CLAIRE
I'll name him... Brian. like your father.

Jamie smiled. The sound of cannons continues, and Jamie turns his back on the big stone, pushing it towards it.

JAMIE
Goodbye, Claire.

She's starting to do it, but she can't say it back. Claire fights him for a beat, but he stands behind her, covering his hands with his, he presses his palms on the cold surface of the stone... Then let go.

SMASH TO BLACK.

BRIANNA (PRE-ROUND)So
that's true, then? All? Is everything you said true?

- EXT. CRAIGH NA DUN - NUIT (55)1968

FIND Claire and Brianna sitting on a log near the stones.
Claire nods. Yes, it's all true. Brianna takes care of it. BRIANNA
Is that... her husband?

CLAIRE
I think.

A beat.

BRIANNA
And... Someone has to... die... to travel through the stones... Is that how it works?

CLAIRE
Gillian believed she needed a human sacrifice... But no one died when I passed.

BRIANNA
She murdered an innocent man.

CLAIRE
Not for the last time.

BRIANNA
You said she saved your life.

CLAIRE
She did. People are... complicated.

A beat. Brianna looks around at the stones, then asks...

BRIANNA
So this was the last place you saw him? My... Father?

CLEAR
Yes.

BRIANNA
I believe you. I do not understand, but I believe you.

She takes her mother's hand, brings her closer.

BRIANNA (continued) (intense)
No more lies. From now on... I only want the truth between you and me.
All right?

Claire is moved. Words she has already heard.

CLAIRE
So like your father... Yes. Only the truth from now on.

Brianna finds it hard to believe, but there is a sense that a new mother/daughter relationship is beginning.

56EXT. ON THE ROAD BY CAR - NIGHT (1968)56

Claire and Brianna have come down the hill and are waiting by the road just as Roger climbs up to meet them.

ROGER
I called the police, anonymously of course. I don't know how long it will be before they get here, but I think it's best that we leave before they arrive.

Claire takes one last look back at the stones looming in the distance behind them. Brianna sees how difficult it is for her mother to leave this place. She looks at Roger, something on her mind.

BRIANNA
Roger... Tell him what you found - maybe it means something after all.

Claire looks at Roger quizzically. Roger takes out the PAPERS from his pocket from earlier.

ROGER
Some research the Reverend did at the request of your husband - your husband Frank. I don't know if he ever sent it to Boston or not.

He hands over the papers and Claire tries to read them, but the light is too dim.

CLAIRE
What does it say?

ROGER
After the Battle of Culloden, some Jacobite officers, all seriously wounded, took refuge in an old house. For two days, they were all taken away to be shot. But one of them, a Fraser of the Master of Lovat's regiment, escaped execution.

Claire stares at him as the involvement sinks.

CLAIRE
There was... a lot of Frasers on the ground that day...

ROGER
But only five Fraser officers. And four of them have their names commemorated on a plaque in the church of Beauly, so we know for sure that they were killed.

CLAIRE
(a whisper) Who was... The fifth?

BRIANNA
James Fraser. My father.

CLAIRE
Jamie did not die in Culloden.

ROGER
No. He intended to die – but he didn't.

CLAIRE
He survived... He survived...

Dawn is fast approaching. Claire staggers away from them for a moment. Brianna and Roger exchange a worried look - will she collapse? But Claire straightens up after a while. Stands up straight. Turns around and confronts them with the unwavering determination of Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser.

CLAIRE (cont'd)
If this is true, then...

We TURN with Claire to face the standing stones.

BRIANNA
You have to go back.

Claire's heart and soul are already climbing the hill to the central stone.

FADE TO BLACK

The Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" (1968) plays on the end credits.
